Opis
Includes the Wing Commander Privateer: Righteous Fire expansion.

2669, Gemini Sector, Troy System. The Terran frontier between the Kilrathi Empire and the unknown. Privateer takes you to the seamy side of the Wing Commander universe. In the far reaches of space, you live by no man’s rules but your own. The fringes are populated by a volatile mix of pirates, miners, mercs, cutthroats, and Kilrathi, all struggling to make a life for themselves.

In this open-ended game you can choose from many paths. You start with a rusted scout ship and a handful of credits in your pocket. It isn't much, but the universe is there for you to explore in search for profitable opportunities. Become a patient, law-abiding merchant, a smuggler far away from the normal space lanes, a pirate preying on the weak, or a professional mercenary hunting down criminal scum. Or just do whatever suits you at the time. At the end of the day, it’s all about money and survival. Mostly money.

Are you determined enough to forge your own destiny?
  • Customize your ship according to your needs and budget, modifying weapons, armor, and other systems.
  • Choose the life of a pirate, merchant, or mercenary. As long as you keep a couple of steps ahead of your enemies and a couple of bucks in the black, you’re a free agent.
  • Explore a vast universe with countless bases and planets spread out across dozens of systems. Adventure, trade, and exploration are limitless, even after you’ve finished the main game

One Of The Elite Classics

While I've been a member of GOG.com for almost two years now, I've always been one to stay on the sidelines and not be actively involved - this game has brought about change. In a gamer's day when space sims were still highly marketable and computer games in general were on top, Origin Systems (We miss you Richard & Robert Garriot) struck gold with the release of "Wing Commander," a masterpiece space sim with Christopher Roberts' in the cockpit. No less popular, and (a little) more non-linear than it's predecessors, Privateer puts you in the pilot's seat of a freelancer simply trying to ply his trade in a most hazardous, yet lucrative 'world' (for lack of a better term). Taking place during the Terran-Kilrathi war, dangers abound, ranging from the obvious Kilrathi, to space pirates, to the Military itself. With the freedom to decide which side you want to favor (albeit with no real change in the storyline), it gives a little flare to gameplay, and adds an element that keeps you playing, even when repetition would have had you moving on to something else after a while. As a freelance Merc, you have the options of trading commodities, legal or otherwise, from planet to planet - even space stations - , collecting bounties on rogue pirates' and their factions, fending off the Kilrathi threat for the Military, and more. What's more, you have the the option to purchase new ships (although your limited to 3 choices), and the purchasing and upgrading of said ship is half of what Privateer is all about. You will spend countless hours saving up the money for weapons or tech upgrades, hunting down the bad guys just for fun, and pursuing a decent storyline. Trust me when I say more hours will be put in to playing the missions of your choice vs. the storyline... as the story itself is not very long, and you face an inevitable death without upgrading, but somehow this game WILL keep you playing. If you've never had an opportunity to play this title (or any Origin game, for that matter) do yourself a favor and try it out. I promise you that there is little else where $5.99 could be better spent. As a game veteran of over 25 years, I have to say "Hats off to the staff!" Thanks GOG! You guys have done wonders in resurrecting gone-but-not-forgotten titles, but this day is one I've been waiting for. I look forward to seeing what other great titles are in store for us!

Still Incredible

After getting some cursor drift in my initial download, I was prepared to be disappointed. However to the GoG staff's credit, within an hour of my initial installation a new download was available that fixed the drift and it's been working correctly ever since. This game takes me back to 1995 when I first played it again, how I couldn't get enough and needed to play just five more minutes. The open ended nature of this game is incredible, you can follow the main story arc, or not. You can deviate from it at anytime you choose, or follow it religiously. It's all up to you. This was one of the first games to ever offer this amount of freedom, and here 16 years later most games still don't allow it. The story arc was epic for it's time encompassing an easy 50 hours of game play just to finish it completely. The only thing I'm disappointed in is no Righteous Fire expansion, but I understand the licensing issues involved. Overall I give this 5 stars, the same I would have back when it was an original release. This is about the best $5.99 you could ever possibly spend.

No Contraband Goods Detected

I was a late comer to the Wing Commander franchise, but I remember walking into a Babbages in Anchorage Alaska and seeing a nondescript gold bordered box, turned it to face me and was instantly awed by the ship cruising towards the space station of my dreams.. I played this game until I could upgrade no more. Then I discovered the rest of the franchise. A lifelong obsession was born with this game and it is no little thing how much it pleases me that a new generation of flyboys can now try to make a living in the space lanes... the hard way. you are doing yourself a disservice to pass this one by!

Amazing game, with an exception

This game is an amazing elite-esque experience. This is the CD-ROM release with the speech pack. This release does NOT include the Righteous Fire expansion. I am purchasing it in the hopes they can include that content later on after further negotiations with EA.

seedy life of an underdog

[review based on original release, not GOG release] Wing Commander was the undisputed king of PC space sims all the way until Freespace came along. The X-Wing series was a strong contender, but never dethroned WC. Privateer takes Wing Commander combat away from the military soap opera, fleshing out the universe behind the battlefront. Your character is no Han Solo hero at heart, and no matter how big the stakes of a mission, he has no higher calling. There is much freedom to travel anywhere between missions, to help or hurt any of a multitude of factions, to trade legal or illegal cargo, and so on. The heart of the game, though, is in the storyline missions. The most you can become outside the storyline is a very rich owner of a single, fully upgraded ship. This isn't a deep sandbox game. However, the combat, ship shopping, and overall presentation are so appealing that the sandbox elements merely add to an already winning mix. Every ship upgrade is useful in some way, whether it's a stopgap or the pinnacle of technology. For much of the game, money is an issue, so missile and armor costs have the bite they ought to. There's a real sense of ownership here, reinforcing the lone wolf character of the hero. Random combat and transport missions are always available (after paying a guild entry fee, of course). With luck, it's possible to combine a couple of combat missions with a transport run for quick if risky money. Even without missions, every nav point carries the possibility of a friendly or hostile encounter. Fighting is fast and fluid despite the sprite-animated ships and projectiles. Shields are just the right balance between fragile and invincible, with the exception of heavy ships that are meant to be resilient. Those usually demand power redistribution and massive firepower, or a quick jump away from danger. AI is skilled without being frustrating. Occasionally, light fighters turn too close in front of your ship and get smashed to pieces, but then again they're supposed to be nuisances. The game engine can't handle more than 4 or so ships at a time, so ships appear in waves. But combat is balanced appropriately to keep things fun. I have many memories of sitting with engines dead and the last few enemy shots clanging home. The music and art are beautiful. Planets and huge space stations are atmospheric, ranging from pastoral to futuristic to Blade Runner-dystopic. The storyline passes the player through the hands of nearly every faction, including militia, pirates, smugglers, military, and even university professors. The opening cutscene sets up the game's ultimate mystery, which once again centers around the hero's own well-being rather than the survival of civilization. The biggest weakness of this game is that you can only own one ship at a time out of the 4 available. The starter ship is eventually too outclassed. The heavy ship is nearly impervious much of the time, but it holds almost no cargo and is too slow to survive large enemy swarms. The freighter would be great for trading, except much of its firepower is concentrated in top and bottom turrets. The turrets can't autofire, the player can't steer while controlling them, and they have poor orientation assistance, making them nearly useless. So by the end of the game, the maneuverable, balanced fighter is really the only way to go. Play the game as a combat sim with bonus trading, and you'll have no complaints whatsoever. At this time, the large expansion pack Righteous Fire is not available on GOG. Normally this would bother me. I'm as much a completionist as anyone. However, Privateer tells a long, complete story by itself. Righteous Fire's upgrades are very nice, to the point where your fighter can defeat almost any opponent with ease. In other words, there's less overall challenge. The Righteous Fire ship upgrades aren't available in the main storyline anyway, and its story is independent of Privateer's. It's a true expansion pack; though excellent, it's not necessary for complete enjoyment of the original.
