Best game I played in 2020

The game little hard at the beginning (maybe because I failed to handle UI at that time) but it is very enjoyable. Pros: 1. Setting. It is very original and I always thinked "How they ever imagined this?" when played. E.g. concept of underworld space, "stars", very extraordinary creatures, all of this very interesting. 2. UI. Maybe they fixed old issues but I find nothing wrong when played using keyboard/mouse. Maybe I just too experienced with roguelikes. 3. Gameplay. I really enjoyed that. Each dwarf has absolutely unique playstyle and tactics and you need to exploit all of them to survive. It is really refreshing compared to the common "press X to the win (or press it with correct timings)". Active pause is very useful and require less good reaction from player, my main issue with shooters and some slashers. Combination of 3 dwarves and creative usage of environment provide great variability of possible tactics and solutions. 4. Locations. They are very beautiful and alien. I liked it from very start and enjoyed until the end. Cons: 1. In stealth missions (there are a lot of them), Shadow (thief) is felt as overpowered and other dwarves are mostly useless. 2. Smashfists (berserker) single-hero chapter takes place in swamps where playing with hime less interesting. Other dwarf chapers are more suited to their abilities. Overall, it is a game which should be tried by everyone.

Fun mix of RPG fights and puzzle stealth

This game is not easy to like, as it tries hard to make the gameplay as unpleasant an experience as possible: Stupid camera that doesn't allow you to tilt the angle to see more than 20 meters ahead? Check. Combat UI where clicking an enemy (if he just moves a bit and is no longer highlighted in orange) makes you run towards him instead of attacking? Check Hordes of enemies with virtually no tutorial on the fighting mechaincs? Check Atrocious voice acting? Check. If you can forgive those things, you can get between 8-15 hours of fun from the game. The 1st Chapter consists of playing a couple levels for the shotgun wielding Forcer (moderately fun), then the dual axe wielding Smashfist (frustrating against long range foes) and ultimately the team of those two, where you get the hang of tactical pause to evaluate the battlefield and plan your attack (putting Smashfist on aggressive stance to shield Forcer from the swarm you can use him to deal with the big boss). If you do persevere to the 2nd Chapter, you'll get to play as Shadow - the stealth operative armed with a bow for long distance kills and a pair of kinves for the close work - whether for a backstab on an unsuspecting enemy or a cutthroat during a teleport (unlockable upgrade). If this sounds like fun for you then this is where the game truly shines (although it does not stop to be frustratingly difficult). Once all 3 dwarfs reunite, you can command them as an effective brute force team, but I found it more fun to play with Smashfist and Forcer in hiding and letting Shadow take down all enemies one by one, typically avoiding an alarm completely (stealth is really forced in three levels only). Boss fights require you to fight with all dwarves and you'll be pausing every two seconds to coordinate the attacks, which is frustrating, but oddly satisfying once you get the hang of it. The real problem is, that there is no 3rd Chapter, even though the story is far from finished. It simply says "to be continued".

The core mechanics of We Are The Dwarves - the actions you can take and the strategies you can employ - are wonderful, well-considered, and fully featured. There’s a depth to the lore and world-building that you rarely see at this scale. But the level design is so constrictive and the difficulty so fierce that it’s a constant fight to have fun.

I got my fair share of enjoyment

What the game does exceptionally well though is combat flow. It's fun to just keep going on and on and on and keep killing and killing endless hordes of quite variable enemies.

I absolutely love this game.

If you like tactical games such as Blackguards, XCOM, Banner Saga etc. - you deffinitely want to experience "We are Dwarves". It will not become "game of the year" for you, it can't compete with AAA titles but it WILL leave something warm and smouldering in your heart longing for future adventures of Dwarves.
