Obscure Beat 'Em Up
This is the localized version of an unlicensed Sega Mega Drive game originally released in Hong Kong and on Taiwan. In the game, you can play as Shi Jin, Hu Sanniang and the black whirlwind Li Kui from the outlaws of the marsh. The core gameplay is somewhat reminiscent of Knights of the Round, with every character wielding their weapon instead of fighting unarmed. Unfortunately, that means that there are no weapons to pick up and use throughout the game and like Knights of the Round, there are no grappling techniques for you to use either. To compensate this lack of variety, you can pick up magic spells which you can save up and use when you need them. The spells are very similar to those in Golden Axe in the sense that they cause a spectacular, screen clearing effect. Unlike Golden Axe, there is no unique magic for either character, but everybody can pick up the different spells, which unfortunately gives all characters a rather similar feel. There are 7 stages in the game, which tend to drag on slightly longer than they can stay interesting. Despite these shortcomings, i can wholeheartedly recommend this game for people who enjoy beat 'em ups with a Knights of the Round feel to them. The core mechanics of this game work very well, the hit detection is good and the combat is satisfying and challenging.
