Warlords Battlecry 2
IMO, this is one of the best rts's ever made and a road game design, as an artform, lamentably chose not travel. There are some serious balance issues with the factions and different hero classes, some feel much less fleshed out and satisfying thematically or to play than others, but the ideas here are stupendous, and where it works, it works incredibly well. Gameplay is generally Solid and varied. There's a good spread of hero-types, combat-focused(melee and magic), troop-focused(healer and buffer), and Rogues who are the usual grab-bag of tricksy abilities(and probably the worst implemented). What exactly they were going for with alchemists isn't exactly clear. The units and RTS elements are very well done. I LOVE the formations and attitudes system in this game(it wasn't the only of its time to have that), and it Sucks modern RTS has decided to abandon them. I much prefer how autocasting in handled under the attitude system than the binary click-on-click-off functionality you usually find, when you find it at all, in other RTSs, tho I'd like greater granularity. Mid-to-Late/Post Game the focus shifts hard from RTS to your Hero, who quite simply becomes a God Killing Monster, but that's satisfying in it's own fashion :3 :3 My big complaints are the faction balance issues, the sparse unit choice and viable strats of some factions, and the lack of options for hero portraits(tho Im sure, if I looked into it, that it'd be super-easy to add more to the game; like many late 90s and early 00s productions, it's intentionally designed for easy modding). There IS one truly annoying Bug in the Ice Queen map -an infinite stat glitch on the AI hero at high hero-lvls which causes a crash if you mouse over them- which I'm a bit disappointed GoG didn't fix in this emulation. Other than that, a true and rare gem, and a taste of what might have been. Sad we didn't get more of this franchise(thanks Ubisoft, ya losers), and that the immediate sequel was so disappointing.
