Playing the STORY MODE would be a great option for all those people that don't want to deal with hardcore puzzles. You won't miss much of the story but at the same time most of puzzles will be easier, require less conditions to be unlocked and you will deal with much less inventory objects. Some passages have been cut but the big part of the game is still there. If you are among those who gave up because the game felt too difficult this is also a good opportunity to give it a try again. Also you can still try the old school mode again once you have completed the story mode.
In a future not too far away, one Artificial Intelligence has prevailed over all other AIs and their governments. Society has migrated to a permanently integrated reality connected to a single neural network that continuously optimizes people's experiences by processing personal data.
Nathan, an outsider still refusing to comply with the new system, makes a living off the grid as a smuggler of modded hardware and cracked software. Geared with his custom headset, he is among the few that can still switch AVR off and see reality for what truly is.
He shares an apartment in the city with his girlfriend Jay, a talented AVR graffiti writer whose drones have been bit-spraying techno-color all over the augmented space in the city.
Waking up one morning, Nathan discovers that Jay disappeared overnight, but not before leaving a cryptic message on their bathroom mirror.
Having accidentally broken his custom headset, Nathan is now disconnected and determined to find out what happened to Jay, but he soon finds himself tangled up in an unexpected journey involving Jay's hacker group and a guild of AVR technomancers.
Travelling around the world, he'll have to deal with hardware graveyards, digital archeology, tribes of cryptoshamans, and virtual reality debauchery.

Really loved this, as a well crafted throw back point and click type of adventure, but has it's totally own vibe and style. A lot of love went into this, you can tell. Some of the puzzles can be a bit frustrating/illogical (an occasional pixel hunt and bewildering inventory item combination) but that just adds to a nostalgic - "totally stuck what next?" lay down all options bit by bit - feel that is reminiscent of early point-and-clicks. Bonus star for the music in this. Always dependant on your tastes, but I think it is great.
This game does a wonderful job of folding you into its world. Every screen is thoughtfully laid out, stunning in detail and purposeful in moving the story forward.
- Polished and Professional
- Amazing soundtrack
- Hands down best Pixel art in the industry
- Intelligent dialog and story
There is also a helpful and vibrant growing community behind this game that is frequented by the creators and cyberpunk enthusiasts alike on discord. As I continue to play and enjoy myself, the advice I would give for this game is take it slow, slip into the character and his cause, soak up the scenery and let the music pull you in further. VirtuaVerse is a pioneering game and is on its way to be a cornerstone of the genre. Do not pass it up.
This game is certainly not fpr everyone. You want huge, real-time rendered almost vr-like langscapes? Nope. You want fast 3d battles with lots of bling and enemies storming you from all sides? Sorry. You want a hifi orchestra-level soundtrack with impressive vocals? Look elsewhere.
But you want a solid adventure game with puzzles that will require the occasional aspirin? Now we're talking. And with inside jokes and memes that people outside the gaming or computer scene won't even recognize as such? Then you're on the right track.
Yes, quite a lot of people are put off by the pseudo pixelartesque look and the chiptune-like music (no voice ingame), but if that doesn't deterr you, you'll like this game. Ok, some of the puzzles are quite difficult and convoluted and sometimes characters have new dialog seemingly without reason, but that's rare. If you listen to what people tell you and combine it, it's more than often a direct hint on what to do.
The game is surprisingly long and has several long "dialog cutscenes" to drive the story. It also has filler character that are irrelevant but serve to build the world, something that's more and more rare in modern adventure games.
So, if you're into cyberpunk and like head-scratching puzzles and sometimes a bit weird humor, this game is for you.
Also, the last few times I checked, the soundtrack was always included with the discount, sou you basically get it for free.
Beautiful pixel art and animations and pretty cool atmosphere but..
.. unfortunately is one of those point and click games where you hoard lots of stuff in the inventory and you never know what to do with them and how to advance in the story..
Beautiful bad game.
I played the demo a while ago and I was very much looking forward to diving into the full experience. The atmosphere and pixel-art style all did a great job of pulling me in and making me want to keep playing until the end.
The gameplay is very much of the classic style: Find objects and use/combine them in ways that sometimes require obtuse logic in order to solve puzzles and progress. Over all, I found the game to be challenging but not impossible to complete without a walkthrough - though I did consult one a few times later in the game. There is a requirement that you do a good amount of backtracking and this did feel quite tedious a few times. This includes going back to other locations not just back and forth across different screens in the same location.
The visuals are one area where this game really stands out for me - a cyberpunk universe with a pixel art style. There are enough details in the environments to make each area feel unique and immersive. I know pixel graphics are not everyone's favourite but I feel like the artists did a great job here in capturing that neon-saturated, rain-soaked cyberpunk feel.
The soundtrack is amazing and added a lot to the atmosphere of the world. There is no voice acting here so expect to do a lot of reading.
The story was pretty good - not amazing though. The ending seems to have disappointed some people. The tone of the game generally is pretty serious but there are moments where the sound design comes across as silly, such as a funny sound effect when interacting with an object in order to solves a puzzle. These are not game-breakers for me though and I was generally pretty engaged throughout. The main character starts out just looking for his girlfriend but as the game progresses there are some pretty big stakes at play in the overarching narrative.
Very much worth checking out if you are a fan of the genre - a little dated (or nostalgic) in design but still a great experience over all.
