Now with the STORY MODE!

Playing the STORY MODE would be a great option for all those people that don't want to deal with hardcore puzzles. You won't miss much of the story but at the same time most of puzzles will be easier, require less conditions to be unlocked and you will deal with much less inventory objects. Some passages have been cut but the big part of the game is still there. If you are among those who gave up because the game felt too difficult this is also a good opportunity to give it a try again. Also you can still try the old school mode again once you have completed the story mode.

In a future not too far away, one Artificial Intelligence has prevailed over all other AIs and their governments. Society has migrated to a permanently integrated reality connected to a single neural network that continuously optimizes people's experiences by processing personal data.

Nathan, an outsider still refusing to comply with the new system, makes a living off the grid as a smuggler of modded hardware and cracked software. Geared with his custom headset, he is among the few that can still switch AVR off and see reality for what truly is.

He shares an apartment in the city with his girlfriend Jay, a talented AVR graffiti writer whose drones have been bit-spraying techno-color all over the augmented space in the city.

Waking up one morning, Nathan discovers that Jay disappeared overnight, but not before leaving a cryptic message on their bathroom mirror.

Having accidentally broken his custom headset, Nathan is now disconnected and determined to find out what happened to Jay, but he soon finds himself tangled up in an unexpected journey involving Jay's hacker group and a guild of AVR technomancers.

Travelling around the world, he'll have to deal with hardware graveyards, digital archeology, tribes of cryptoshamans, and virtual reality debauchery.

Style over substance

First of all: I do like the setting, I do like what Blood Music does in other entertainment genres and I do like pixelart. But while this checks all the boxes, I find it somewhat difficult to enjoy the game. On the one hand, I like the audio-visual aspect of the game. It has a nice neon-retro-cyberpunk-feel and there are obvious nods to elements associated with this everywhere. So it sets off as a maybe somewhat stereotypical, but not yet overused nice gritty cyberpunky point and click. However, it quickly trails off and every hint of a story is clustered with sometimes nonsensical or at least very far-fetched puzzles. In my opionion, a lot of good point&click games involve you in the story and have puzzles and diaolgues along the way that guide you through the story and play into it. However, the puzzle chains in VirtuaSense feel like they are disconnected from the story itself and simply "unlock" a new piece of dialog or a journal entry, without actually integrating themselves into the story. And on top of that, they are drawn out way too far for actually - in my opinion - very mundane aspects of the game. I don't want to spoil anything, but talking to at least 5 characters, traveling between locations multiple times, listening to very cringy and stereotypical characters and wasting a good 45 minutes early on for something that should be easily obtainable in such universe feels very unorganic. It is a game, yes, it has game puzzle logic, yes, and you find mostly enough hints for solution without guessing your way through, but so far I found basically every puzzle too drawn out for what you get in the end and far too distracting and disconnected from what could be described as a story. I haven't finished it yet and so far found myself pretty bored. Currently, there a better cyberpunk/sci point and click games out there, like Technobabylon or Gemini Rue. Give it a shot if you played through these, but play these first, if you haven't yet instead of this.

Not bad, but not as good as it looks

I love point & click adventures and I enjoy sci-fi dystopian settings, namely cyberpunk. This game was an obvious purchase for me, from the get-go. The pixel art looks great in trailers and screenshots, too, which is a sweet bonus. Then I installed and tried the game and... well... it's not bad, you can do way worse than VirtuaVerse, but it clearly isn't as good as it had led me to believe. Gameplay-wise, it's a traditional 2D point & click. If you ever played one of those, you should be fine with VirtuaVerse. Nothing wrong or broken, in this department. Puzzles, on the other hand, while not obtuse like some in other games of the genre, aren't the easiest, most sensible or even the most interesting ones around, and I found they DO, in fact, break the otherwise relatively good pacing of the game. kiralein said they haven't seen a single "stupid" puzzle in the game, well, I came across some pretty annoying ones pretty early on, already, so I guess your mileage may vary, on this subject. The game surely doesn't ease you in, it starts with pretty involved puzzles right from the start -- which is nice, if that's your thing, but it definitely isn't mine. Story is OK, writing is mediocre (I'm guessing the devs aren't native English speakers, because some of the dialog is very cringe-inducing), the protagonist is not very likeable, interesting or relatable. Art, well... it's subjective, but I was expecting something more like Desert Child (which I think has some of the best pixel art), and what I got was something that feels lazy and not that good-looking. Music is fine, if you're into this sort of thing. If you're like me, though, you can at least turn it off. The game is not well optimized. I more than meet the system requirements, but I always get huge load times between scenes (and you'll be switching scenes A LOT). We're talking roughly 10 seconds of black screen. Hopefully they address this. All in all, I recommend it. Just don't set your expectations too high.

I love this pixely dystopian cyberpunk

Do you love atmospheric detailed pixel art with lots of details to find? Get this game, oh boy, are you in for a treat. Do you love Cyberpunk which does not shy away from showing changes in society and how we could be changed by technology and how the world will progress? Get this game, I love the world-building! Do you love classic adventures? Get this game, I haven't seen a single stupid puzzle so far, everything makes sense and some of the solutions you find are hilarious, I had more than one good laugh. Also, if you love good electronic music, that isn't hiding itself and likes to beat in your face, this alone might be a reason to buy this game. Great game with some flaws.

Graphics: The graphics are beautiful for a pixel art game. From the very detailed cityscape to many more environments. Story: Very fun and funny but basic story with a lot of WTF moments. Sound: Music is made by Master Boot Records and is very great in some adrenaline parts and the normal ambiance. You can find the OST here https://masterbootrecord.bandcamp.com/album/virtuaverse-ost. Puzzles: O boy, this is where it kinda go's wrong. Sometimes the puzzles are straight forward. But other times it's just so convoluted. Sometimes you think you can use 1 item normally but then it just doesn't work for reason the character doesn't say. Also it sometimes go's trough tire some puzzle loop. You have a problem then you find the solution except there is a problem getting that. Verdict: In the end I would recommend this game to anybody who loves Cyberpunk Point & Click games.

Gorgeous, moody, breathtaking, imperfect

Virtuaverse is a dazzlingly pretty 2D pixel art cyberpunk adventure game that includes an astonishingly moody retrowave soundtrack by Master Boot Record, but trips up somewhat in the narrative and puzzle design departments. This game is an absolute visual treat - the pixel artistry on display here is astounding. Everywhere I went, I just wanted to see more. And the sound design backs this up, everything from the masterful MBR music, the sound effects, the details in the visuals all combined to make this world a fantastic one to explore. I wish Nathan were a likable dude. I don't want to spoil anything, so let's just say that he starts the game searching for his missing girlfriend, and before he got close to her, I started wishing he would NEVER find her, so she could be free of this stalker-ish psychopath. This game is crying out for a hint system. Most of the time, your goal is clearly defined, and some exploration and talking to people will clue you in to what you need to do to proceed. But more than a few times, I found myself scratching my head upon finding the correct solution by complete accident, and solved a couple of puzzles by rubbing every inventory item I had on every interactable object. Overall, I really liked it, despite the protagonist and puzzle problems, this was an absolutely wonderful feast for my eyes and ears, and I recommend checking it out for yourself.
