Virginia is a single-player first-person thriller set in a small town with a secret. Experience a missing person investigation through the eyes of graduate FBI agent, Anne Tarver.
Together with your partner, seasoned investigator, Maria Halperin, you’ll take a trip to idyllic Burgess County and the secluded town of Kingdom, Virginia, where a young boy has vanished and nobody seems to know why.
Before long Anne will find herself negotiating competing interests, uncovering hidden agendas and testing the patience of a community unaccustomed to uninvited scrutiny.
As your investigation takes a turn for the sinister, and the list of suspects grows ever larger and stranger, you will make decisions which irrevocably shape the course of Anne’s and agent Halperin’s lives.
Cinematic editing that immerses players in a story told in the style of film and TV
A dreamlike journey punctuated by intense drama and populated by a memorable cast of curious characters
A stirring soundtrack composed by composer Lyndon Holland and recorded live by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra at the renowned Smecky Studio (Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive)
An original detective noir story in the tradition of Twin Peaks, Fargo and True Detective
A striking, painterly art style, steeped in the magic of small town America and the vibrant Virginia countryside.
This isn't mentioned in the game details, but it is important to say that this is not OSX Catalina (10.15) compatible and since it hasn't been updated since 2017, I'm guessing it won't be.
This game was not was I was expecting at all. The story is pretty linear, not a single word is uttered throughout the whole game and there's a bunch of surreal stuff going on or were they just dreams or both? I got this game for 90 cents and played it for about 1 hour 30 minutes so I'm not upset about this being called a thriller when it shouldn't be.
The atmosphere was pretty good and so was the music but the story leaves a lot to the imagination. I wouldn't even call this an exploration game since you don't really get to explore anything nor were there any real action. I don't know... It's just weird. Maybe it could appeal to some Twin Peaks fans or something since that was the general vibe I got from Virginia. I did enjoy the aesthetics though.
Flat out, did not enjoy. Disjointed, no decision making throughout. I'm not sure what I was supposed to get out of this experience other than it feeling like a 90s mystery thriller. That part was decent and carried me to the end. But otherwise, I couldn't recommend it to anyone.
One small caveat: I played the PS4 version, which may have something to do with my dislike, see below.
Now, I "played" it for the first time, yesterday, and I "played" it through, in a two, to two-and-a-half hour long sitting.
I write "playing" in quotation marks, because there is not much to play there.
You can move in some locations with your left thumbstick, you can look around with your right thumbstick, and you can click on marked hotspots with "X" - and that's it.
I will concede, that - would I have played my GOG-version, my verdict "might" be a slightly better one - maybe three stars, but not higher.
That's because, due to the rather inaccurate steering with the controller, I may have missed out some hotspots during my playthrough.
I assume this to be the case, because I checked the achievements after I was finished "playing", and the descriptions were of the nature of "checked behind water cooler", etc.
Now, had I played with mouse and keyboard, instead of the PS4 controller, I may have looked more closely for "hidden" hotspots, but as it was - the accuracy just wasn't good enough to make me want to invest more time searching for them.
Especially, since in the first few minutes, you wouldn't find anything - even IF you looked around in every nook and cranny.
I am also not sure, how you are supposed to look for everything, when the game decides seemingly on its own, when to cut from one scene to the next.
There were scenes, where I wanted to look for something more, but couldn't, because the game just jumped to the next scene.
The game itself reminded me in quite some ways on "Twin Peaks", which wouldn't be bad - if there would have been an actual game.
But as it is, this is essential a walking simulator - and I prefer a little more actual "game" in my games.
After I was done, my first thought was "Wait? this was it?", followed by "Hey devs, if you want to make movies, then why not just switch industries?"
Conclusion: As a movie, this would have been better.
The game is good at pretending to be deep, but it feels empty and barren. It wouldn't be mysterious at all if you could actually hear or read the dialogues. As it is, now you are left to imagine what is happening. While much of it is plain enough, other parts are vague. It just feels like a cheap trick to achieve an impression of depth. Even the creator says that he does not know what the game is about and that any interpretation is valid. I don't like that approach to art. If i wanted to imagine a story I'd rather just write one myself. Not sit here and have very limited means of using my imagination.
I like part of the editing. The music is good. Graphics are sometimes good. Environments are dull and very plain, with a few exceptions. I liked a few scenes and areas, which makes me rate this a two. It was worth the money as i bought it at a huge discount. Quite bad but at least it's different and for that sake perhaps worth to play for some.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
