This should have been a telltale game. The combat and RPG elements feels like fillers. Whatever enemy you kill you still get like 2 xp so why farm? You get the illusion of choice but don't The game practically tells you who to fall in love with and who to dislike. You need to sleep to level up and put points into skills. WHwn you wake up random people have random afflictions so you have to walk all the way over to them to give them meds. It's tedious chores and the pay off is practically nothing. Avoid at all cost if you like vampiire the masquerade-games because this tries to mimic them and fails horribly.
First off the combat is clunky, animations are off and their isn't much satisfaction in defeating enemies. Funny enough I would say that in many ways the gameplay feels like a piranha bytes game like Elex or gothic.
That isn't the worst thing about the game though, the cringe left-wing agenda pushing is what really ruins Vampyr. If you've paid attention to DontNod in the past then you know that they suffer from a terminal case of TDS and wokism.
That illness manifests throughout the narrative of Vampyr. For example your main love interest is a self proclaimed feminist who often provides commentary on what you do and should think. She's very angry that there's a group of rich men who have created a private club for men only in London. She wants you to destroy this club by any means necessary because of "sexism." Bear in mind that she's an elite herself and could very easily create her own exclusive club for women. Remember dear gamer we must defeat the evil men! They are the real problem!
This same love interest has an adopted black daughter named Charlotte who is a suffragette. You find her protesting gender equality on the streets of London at night... during a plague that's killed thousands. Yeah... I don't think I need to tell you how ridiculous that is. Also I should mention that you pretty much have to acknowledge her every time you go to the district she's in given how she's always yelling various talking points into your eardrum as you run by.
Then last but not least there's a rich and influential man in London who acts as a insert for Trump. He looks similar and is campaigning for the idea of building a wall around the plague districts to quarantine the sick. To anyone who is not a seething irrational liberal this appears to be a good idea. Alas your love interest says that walls are racist and hurt people so we are encouraged to kill the Trump stand-in instead.
I think by now you've got the gist of it and know why you shouldn't purchase this game.
The game is OK. with nothing really to recommend it.
the play and fights are rather repetitive and easy to handle.
But the never ending PC pablum was so distracting that my enjoyment of the game
was almost nil.
it is told almost completely within a 21st century leftist college formula of "acceptable"
responses and totally ignores the mores and reactions of the 1900's.
It is idiotic when the main character has just returned from WW1.
Most of the storepage screenshots misrepresent the game.
The game has 3rd person,fighting, rpg like gaming.
I don't like my time being wasted by misleading advertising. It's a growing problem across the gaming world, whether it is screenshots on a website or fake cinematic adverts on the television.
You know, there are some things I quite like about it. The map and world look quite nice and detailed. The progression system is not bad, decent amount of weapons and customization. Atmosphere is pretty good, has a unique setting. Voice acting is decent and soundtrack is nice.
And I was willing to forgive the game for the bad console controls/port, clunky combat system, bugs and gafs, weird animations, amateurish/confusing/vague writing and dialogue, weird game balance. It all started out quite nice, but gotten noticeably worse towards the end of the game.
That I could have gotten over.
But the consistent nagging and preachiness of the game simply makes me want to murder people. This arrogant pretentious assumption that morality is defined by the political left, while the political right is the source of the worlds evils is a blatant insult. I wish games were tagged somehow that allows the identification of the leftist political propaganda bullshit.
Some make excuses for it based on either a unique good story or Dark Souls like combat system.
If you think that mandatory symphatising with Romanian communists in London in 1918 during an epidemic while being a blood-thirsty vampire is a standard for unique storytelling, then clearly Im out of the mainstream, because I think its absurd. There are good elements to the games storytelling, but there too many examples of weird and unnatural story-developments to complensate it.
I havent played Dark Souls, but if that means that you have to constantly have prolonged fights with groups of enemies and crappy console controls over and over (with little to no reward) just to get to another story objective, well then, apparently Im not in the cool camp again. It does get easy if you devour a third of the games characters, but it still remains overall not fun.
Freaking shame such a unique concept is ruined by such poor execution.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
