A solid single-player experience

As others have said, it's not bad for an indie title. Its intended audience is those who like to explore and those who enjoy a deep story. If you are looking for a game to play with friends or a hack-and-slash, this game is not what you are looking for. Pros: - The combat is a bit different, without reinventing the wheel - Offers a story mode - Advancement is more unique and feels far less grindy - Lots to explore: there's probably 4-5 days of gameplay here, and that's without eating or sleeping - Feels like an epic fantasy novel - The graphics are good without being amazing or taxing - There is no multiplayer screwing up the single player experience - The story isn't afraid to do the interesting thing as opposed to the easy thing that appeases the bleeding hearts or caters to the lowest common denominator Cons: - Story mode needs to offer an obvious option to simply skip combat altogether - Advancement offers limited choices - The unique gear isn't worth keeping (most of the time). Break down everything and forge your own. - The choices offered to the player have no actual bearing on the outcome of the story - Several side-arcs are left unresolved in ways that could annoy some players - Replayability after beating the story might be limited Summary It's been a long time since I got to experience a really good story that didn't completely disappoint me at the end. I had forgotten what that felt like. Overall, this is an excellent single-player experience. Sure, there are aspects of the game (and its story) that aren't perfect. Sure, they could have made things a bit better here and there. That's why they got four stars and not three. There are many triple-A titles that I wouldn't give even three stars to. The big-name studios could learn a lot from these guys. I can't wait for their next effort. Verdict: Buy this game. Play this game.

Best free game I ever played.

Okay full disclosure, I got this game for free a few days ago when GOG was offering it for free. This is easily the best free game I've ever played. If I had spent $25 (the current asking price) I would have been very happy. This was a very well done game. The battle system takes a bit of getting use too as it's a little different than your average CRPG but it's still pretty great. There's a lot of nuance to the itemization system. If I had one complaint it would be that you either don't get enough loot to truly explore the system or you don't get enough control over the item creation to do so. I would have liked to see the ability to really play with the itemization more, but I often times felt like new items, even legendary items were simply underwhelming and that since I didn't get enough other items to take advantage of the oddities in the itemization system, most of the items went unused. It also seems like you hit a wall at some point where items stop progressing. You get the odd upgrade now and then but it's almost like the color or rarity of the item has little to do with it's actual stats. You could get a tier 5 green that easily outclasses a tier 5 legendary for instance. I liked the sense of choice, but I'd have also liked to see the choices play more of a role. That said, the game was still fantastic and I highly recommend it to anyone that is a fan real, offline CRPGs that don't have some tacky, tacked on multiplayer component that restricts your gameplay to maintain some stupid e-sport class balance bullcrap. Kudo's to Event Horizon, Having only just learned about your company I very much look forward to Dark Envoy and will very likely snag it as soon as it comes out. One final thought: Unlike other CRPGs that have modding support with the ability to modify in-game flags and stuff via a console, this title does not have that ability. I hope Dark Envoy includes some mod support and the lost art of "cheats" or whatever you want to call em.

Too long and too easy, but fun.

This game is fun. It tries to mix real time combat with a pause with some dungeon exploration. It is not just another Diablo clone. What are the issues with the game. I spend over 50h and play on highest difficulty. Game is too long for what it is (I'm somewhere in the middle) and way too easy. Combat encounter are just boring and not challenging. The story that game tries to tell is just boring and a huge slog. Story asks me to make a choice from time to time but over long period of time they are few and far between. Game offers good variety of enemies in combat and forces to pay attention but combat is way to easy if you know how to combo stuff. Most of the fights I set my characters to auto attack and go get a tea (on highest difficulty).

Neat mechanics, ludicrous writing

PRO: - excellent music - visually beautiful - overall polished feel to it - interesting character abilities, if you're into the technical aspects of gameplay. - interesting items, if you're into the technical aspects of gameplay. - crashes every now and again, but saves frequently. doesn't feel too buggy for me otherwise. I play on debian GNU/linux. CON: - generic, trope-riddled story - the writing. dear god, the writing. both in cutscenes and ingame dialogue, the text makes me cringe twice every minute. the dialogue is stiff, heavy-handed and full of clumsy exposition. despite some effort on the game's behalf to make the characters individual, they all talk the same. not in an kind of way, but in an kind of way. for me this was the biggest concern, it took me out of the experience constantly. I continue to play for the gameplay, despite the story & dialogue. I received this for free. Had I payed 20 bucks myself, I'd probably award only 2/5.
