PTSD Simulators

Take in mind that WWII GI is based on NAM, which is in turn based on an old Total Conversion of Duke Nukem 3D, so it has a few similarities with that game. However both of this games, specially WWII are huge unbalanced messes. In both games you have to face off dozens of hitscanners that can take you down in seconds and you'll never know where they come from, you have to deal with countless hazards that the game doesnt give you any visual cue about. Add the sub-par map design along with the messy audio and graphical design and you have such a pair of games that will actually give you PTSD.

Unfair and broken.

War is hell, and so are these two broken messes. World War II GI and NAM are interesting in premise, make war games based on the build engine, the Duke Nukem 3D version of the Build engine to be precise, in fact these feel a lot more like commercial total conversions than original games. Despite having a good base in Dukes gunplay, the game ruins it with aimless level design, hit-scan enemies and instant death traps. I can't get anywhere in this game without using cheats. Unless you just have to play EVERY Duke Nukem 3D or build engine based game, don't bother with this.

Challenging But Good

I've not played NAM yet, but I completed WWII GI and loved it. While the game is challenging, it isn't unfair, and while it does have the odd glitch, it isn't broken. Any comparison to Duke Nukem 3D is only superficial, no doubt due to the Build engine, and I never found myself thinking I was playing some total conversion. I loved the atmosphere and the challenging game play. For me personally, it is a classic old school FPS, and a must play if you like FPS games from that era. Because it is challenging, you need to take your time getting to know the ropes. It is one of those games that gamers either love or hate, and I suspect many just don't persevere long enough to fully appreciate the game.
