In war, not everyone is a soldier.
In This War Of Mine you do not play as an elite soldier, rather a group of civilians trying to survive in a besieged city; struggling with lack of food, medicine and constant danger from snipers and hostile scavengers. The game provides an experience of war seen from an entirely new angle.
The pace of This War of Mine is imposed by the day and night cycle. During the day snipers outside stop you from leaving your refuge, so you need to focus on maintaining your hideout: crafting, trading and taking care of your survivors. At night, take one of your civilians on a mission to scavenge through a set of unique locations for items that will help you stay alive.
Make life-and-death decisions driven by your conscience. Try to protect everybody from your shelter or sacrifice some of them for longer-term survival. During war, there are no good or bad decisions; there is only survival. The sooner you realize that, the better.
Yes, this game has a strong atmosphere and shows the horrors of war. BUT the gameplay is extremely boring. Just click on thing and wait. I died fairly quickly, but I'm okay with that. Maybe it's a stupid decision to try to help people when you are desperate and I have no problem with a game that forces you to do hard choices. It's really just the boring gameplay that's really bothering me.
Do you want to know what it's like to be 90 years old and everything takes a long time to complete? Always tired, hungry, and in a bad mood? This is the game for you.
This game has 0 respect for your time. Instead of advancing time when you have a task to complete, you have to sit there waiting for an arbitrary progress meter to complete. You never have enough food or supply, you can't carry practically anything, and literally every single thing that you do in this game has a time sink mechanism attached to it. 1 hour after waking up and your character is crying about being tired because you used a pickaxe for 5 minutes.
I could forgive some of the 'difficulties' with surviving in the game, but over 50% of the game is waiting. Waiting for your character to walk somewhere, waiting for them to open a door, waiting for them to cook something, etc. Style over function.
It also runs like a complete dog. No borderless window, so you have to use borderless gaming. It works but tabbing is still painful and causes the game to hang every time like it's on the edge of crashing.
The OST is decent, but it's short and only 1 tone. For me, this game is one of those that almost hit the mark in several areas but never does. Too much waiting. Mind boggling how this title has a higher rating than Frostpunk. It's not even close to half the game that is, in every single area imaginable.
