Great storytelling, memorable game world

Witcher 3 is roughly as big as Fallout 4 or Skyrim in terms of hours of gameplay - about 200 hours from the base game and 80 hours from the DLC if you are thorough. The combat mechanics aren't as good as those in the two Bethesda games, but the storytelling in Witcher 3 is a notch above everything else I've seen. Many of the storylines in the main and side quests involve moral decisions that are more nuanced and thought-provoking than what you are used to seeing in other RPGs. There are many branching paths that allow you try different decisions. Consequences from those decisions can be shocking, and are not often predictable. The writing, quest designs, cut scenes, all the lore text, character bios, bestiary info, etc., are all top notch. And the game world is huge. Other than loading a save, there is no screen-loading anywhere you go, astonishing for a world this size. One minor quibble is that the dungeons in Witcher 3 are generally kind of small. Another minor quibble is that the game starts with an underwhelming tutorial zone that takes 6-8 hours. That usually leads to an unfavorable first impression in many first-time players. But once you are past that, the game really gets going.

Has to be Game of the Year 2015.

First witcher game I have every played and the first quests had me hooked. The story is deep and interesting, every choice you make can have serious implications on the ending (good or bad). Characters have rich backstories which makes all the quests you do that much more enjoyable as their personality comes across strongly when you are accompanied by them. This is one of the only games where I want to do all the side quests just to see all that it has to offer. Combat is as rewarding as it is punishing. The satisfaction gained when you block a strike to counter attack or dodge a huge strike from a monster is amazing. Also getting hit hard for one dodge too early or too late is great, although a little frustrating at time. Performs well, even on low end rigs, and looks fantastic. Voice acting is top quality which adds to the feeling that the world of the Witcher 3 is really 'alive'. The pre-rendered cut scenes are a little jarring at times though. CD Projekt RED doesn't shy away from adding sexual content and gore to enrich the experience, hence the 18 rating, and I believe the game is better for it. Absolutely fantastic game, so much content and all of it to the same high standard makes me want to do multiple play throughs to see how different decisions pan out for all the characters. Gwent is pretty fun too.

don't waste your time..

..playing other games. just end your gamer career with the bang and play tw3, because after this experience you'll be complete. and happy. and sad, because it's over. and grateful to cd projekt red. and.. listen: just try it.

Exquisitely made, but flawed

There's no doubt that this game had a lot of heart put into its creation. It's very pretty, the music has high production values, and it's incredibly big. But somehow I feel it is missing heart. It felt much longer than it should have been- at about 2/3rds of the way in the burnout started creeping in, and I felt a bit tired when it didn't end at the big climactic battle (that turned out to be only the first one). The combat got a bit repetitive, so much so that I ended up avoiding a lot of encounters not because of difficulty, but because it felt like a chore. The balance is a bit off- I kept these big lead-ups to quest conclusions with trumped up rewards that ended up being less powerful than what I already had. Likewise, leveling up wasn't as big a deal once the new perks started feeling underwhelming. Herb collection for alchemy became pointless about halfway through. The world was too big for its own good, and too full of meaningless busywork. Still, it's the only Witcher I've been able to complete, so it has that going for it!
