I own the old original game and I replayed it with the applied new free remaster patch.
Saya no Uta is an absolute masterpiece of storytelling. If I remember well, the Steam version was censored and that was insane cause XXX parts of the game here are very important for the story but this is first and foremost a horror/love story, not porn.
Having said that, I'd recommend this game to all horror fans with just a friendly warning for those new to Japanese VNs. There are 2 or 3 choices throughout the whole game (it depends on what path you choose) so the game is mostly heavy reading and, equal part, nice art. You SHOULD NOT play this game if you're depressed or in a dark period of your life. Also, the game is very DISTURBING - forget childish jump scares - this is something completely else.
I'll just finish this review with a warning that you'll go through a plethora of different, often contradictory, emotions: revulsion, love, sadness, desperation... all of them reserved for our protagonist and Saya. And let's not forget the music - I can still hear Sabbath when I close my eyes.
First of all, if you're looking for a hentai VN, keep looking. Song of Saya does have a couple of sex scenes, but it's not porn. It's an utsuge, which roughly translates to "depressing game" and oh believe me, it will make you feel like crap. And you probably don't want that if you're looking for hentai. Or maybe you do, you weirdo.
Anyways, Song of Saya was written by the notorious Gen "Urobutcher" Urobuchi and if by any chance you don't recognize and fear that name already, by the time you've finished Song of Saya, you probably will. True to the Urobutcher modus operandi, the game is really goddamn sad and bleak the whole way through, with the romance (because yes, Song of Saya is a love story) being essentially the only source of positivity.
It also delves into some really heavy and dark subject matters, so you should probably avoid the game if you can't handle that stuff.
All that being said, it's really well written. There's a reason as to why Song of Saya is regarded as one of the best horror visual novels out there. The OST is both hauntingly beautiful and disturbing, the perfect fit for the game it was made for. So if you can stomach a tragedy (or if you crave one for whatever reason) then Song of Saya should be a top pick.
The best visual novel that I wish I never played.
I remember playing the game on my PSP a long time ago and this game did leave a deep impression in me.
The writing is top-notch, there's a really messed up situation, a messed up story, the messed up story has "beacon of light" for the main character that they focus on, and you start to feel for the characters, even though the situations becoming increasingly messed up.
This game heavily focuses on story angles and the different perceptions that people live in. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's depressed and/or going through a dark period as the darkness in this story is kinda on the more on the serious side.
The music soundtrack is all kinds of twisted and it feels like it was made to make you feel uncomfortable and uneasy about everything, I can't imagine a more suitable soundtrack for this game.
Saya for the MC is kinda cute tho, ngl.
I read this one like a decade ago and it gave me nightmares for a few weeks. I'm a horror nut, it's rare that anything can ever actually scare me, but this one really got under my skin. I've always wanted to financially support the devs through direct and legal means, but the Steam release was censored, and I don't do censorship, so I've been waiting for an uncensored release. If you dislike basically all of Gen Urobuchi's other stuff, don't let that deter you, this is his only product I'm aware of that I've enjoyed. That magical girl series was way not my cup of tea. Would've been great if they'd folowed up this game with some other stories in the same world or something, but the one-off nature of it makes it feel more timeless. Well worth a read.
Kudos to Jast and Nitroplus for bringing this one to GOG, they deserve all the sales they can get. I can't recommend Saya no Uta highly enough for people who don't mind being disturbed or leaving far from their comfort zone. If you think Silent Hill was enjoyably haunting, this is the next level.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
