Decent game, issues not fixed.
The game itself is pretty decent - far better than both Heritage of Kings and Settlers 7 in my opinion. But beware: if you have more than 2 GB of video RAM, you will be forced to run this at the very lowest texture resolution, making the game look horrible - and run poorly. GOG really needs to fix this for modern systems.

Laptop issue patch released
I have had this game on CD for ages but never played as it wouldn't run on my gaming laptop. I've referred this problem to GOG and unlike Ubisoft who didn't bother to issue a patch GOG have supplied one which works perfectly. I've just started playing so I can't review the game yet but well done GOG!!

Hi Gog Team Great Job with your video patch! Original woulnt even start on a surface 3 atom. Your version runs beautifully in full hd, I can't belive it. Even with touch input it is playable (use touch gesture studio and autohotkey to add rotation gestures etc.). Thanks a lot!

Wonderful Game
For those comparing to early (late 20th century) versions of the game, it is all they were and better and more. The artistry is charming, and there is more depth in every way. I think it's one of the best economic simulations around. I don't mean spreadsheets and a floods of numbers. Just the opposite - there is a fun process of planning and building. The player has a primary avatar on the map - the knight. Your knight races around the map on various errands and mini quests. As your knight rises in rank, settlers' needs 'awaken'; new products are needed to sustain a higher level of culture. Watching the created town is fun, and the game is very family friendly. Some of the later scenarios I found hard to understand and overly scripted. In one case I used a cheat to complete a level. That would often leave me highly critical of the game, but there is just too much to enjoy. I have seen the game described in comparison to Age of Empires. While that comparison is technically valid, I would say the gameplay is not similar at all. Settlers games are about enjoying creation and knowing your settlements in detail, not so much grouping masses of faceless troops for another assault. Five stars for a great idea made even better.

My Favorite of the Series
I found myself playing this Settlers far more than any others. It was criticized by some of the original Settlers fans for being too much like Age of Empires, but it featured some unique changes to that game including the "hero" based system with special powers. Each map has missions and a plot which make it more than mere resource management and conquest. More importantly, it allowed the player community an easy way to create and play their own maps which made for countless free maps which are still available to this day at www.settlersmaps.com. In fact, some new maps are still being made, although much fewer. The game is not perfect, but it is unique and with ample maps (both in game and user made) which I have been playing now for years, even after Settlers 7 came out. Definitely my favorite of the series.
