Finally Works on Win10

I love this game and have done that since it was released. Have been so happy too be able too play it on new computers too. But on Win10 it was not possible for me. Now 2-3years from when i bought it from GoG it finally works on Win10, and with full screen support also! absolutely fantastic! The most funny thing is that i gave it a chance yesterday and it didn't work, then just 1day after they came with the update! That is just soo strange but funny. Thank you GoG that you updated this! You are all fantastic people and love the opportunity too play all the old games on new machines.

Works well on Windows10

I couldn't play until I searched the forum and found that deleting the "dbghelp.dll" in the folder (\Settlers 4 Gold\Exe\). It really worked. Hope it can help you, too. This is really a fantastic game that I always want to play every few years. The solved error was "Software 3D: Error initializing Graphic Interface!"

The Settlers IV: A Good Old Game

The Settlers IV was the first game of the series I played back in the days and it is still my favourite one. Although I have strong nostalgic feelings about it, I can say for sure the game in general aged very well. Compared to modern strategy games the mechanics are still great and the visuals are also petty to look at (considering the age of this game). Clearly, such a masterpiece deserves a five stars rating only (or an A+, or a 10 out of 10). Unfortunately, as of the time of this review, the game offered here does not work on Windows 10 out of the box. But luckily a workaround for this problem exists. So big thanks to the guys who figured all that out.

Fix Error initializing Graphic Interface

In case you also have an AMD Graphics Card you might get an error "Software 3D: Error initializing Graphic Interface". Check if the problem is what the fix for is: - Go to "C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Settlers 4 Gold\Exe" - Make sure it is a problem with "minidumpwritedump" in "atiumdag.dll" by starting S4_Main.exe directly If an error message comes up multiple times mentioning "MiniDumpWriteDump" and / or "atiumdag.dll" continue to fix: - Go to "C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Settlers 4 Gold\Exe" - Locate a file called "DbgHelp.dll" and rename it to like "DbgHelpOld.dll" - any other name should do too. Now start the game again through GOG or directly. Explanation: It seems to me like the latest ATI Driver might want to use functionality the game developers should provide by todays standards - since the functionality seems to adress Debug-Standards what is usually only necessary for software development it seems safe to disable the whole file by renaming. This Error also seems to occur at other games / software.

Does not work

This is my first review at all, but I am so frustrated I have to vent somehow. I really tried to get this working on win10, but it just doesn`t work. I own this exact GOG version of the game for a long time now and played it fine from time to time. Until leaving windows 7. Since then, I`ve never been able to play it again. And I have searched for years and tried really hard. Updating, DXGL, dxwrapper and everything, but it just won`t play. If you`re considering to buy this game, please take a look in the GOG support forum before and see how the community treats questions. Plot twist: there`re no responses AT ALL. I guess there are enough people able to play the game on modern machines to not bug GOG, but the majority IS NOT. If you still consider buying the game, wait for a sale to gamble your money on a chance to play it. I`ll probably try again in a year or so. I´ll update this review if I find a solution OR there`s a patch...
