The Mummy Demastered throws you into a 16-bit-inspired battle against the undead in a 2D, nonlinear, action-packed adventure. As an elite agent in the monster-hunting Prodigium organization, you must use a variety of weapons, upgrades, and mysterious artifacts to defend mankind against the supernatural hordes of Princess Ahmanet. Your Prodigium unit is already on the scene, but HQ lost contact with them hours ago. Only by exploring tombs, forests, abandoned tunnels, and the cursed streets of London will you discover the fate of your allies. But beware - Ahmanet commands legions of undead, insects, plague-ridden vermin, and worse! If you're not careful, you'll be the next soul in her army.
Stunning retro-inspired graphics and atmospheric chiptune soundtrack
Simply put, good game crap movie Way Forward put forth a good MV title that has a stellar soundtrack and atmosphere with a interesting death mechanic, if you die you have to fight your zombified corpse in order to get your gear back. This game also features the best 2d Flamethrower outside of Contra: Hard Corps like seriously I feel like Yahtzee talking about shurikens and lightning on this beast.
The length of the game is a tad on the short side but, well worth the 20 bucks as there is always completionist stuff to do collect relics, ammo bandoliers and health extensions. All in all 4/5 stars
For a licensed game based on a really bad movie...this is a really good game.
If you like metroidvanias then you will absolutely love this game, it's very well polished and has a really good progression of difficulty/exploration throughout it.
It really should have been a new IP Altogether.
The only s*** issue with this game is the bloody backtracking; otherwise, everything is FANTASTIC: so, this leads me (and possibly you) to question, "how the f*** is a movie game good?".
I'm glad you asked! The shooting is good! The jumping is good! The side-abilities and gear collection is good! The enemies are fantastic! Like Frank West's FAAAAAAAANTASSTIC!
It's just pleasing: the game has all the 101s metroid-style gameplay right ironically and it's polished to the bone!
But, if you hate backtracking, you will probably hate this game: it's criminal to some backtracking tropes, so here's warning for you.
BUT THE JUMPING AND SHOOTING THOUGH
So, having finally purchased this game, I was fully ready to take on what I was told would be a brutal challenge. See, the game employs a system in which your faceless soldier, if greeted with death, is turned into a zombie. The next soldier you use must fight this zombie to reclaim all of the upgrades you have collected. This is certainly an interesting mechanic... but I never saw it. If you don't die, you'll never engage this mechanic and the difficulty is quite sane. There are moments where you may get close to death (the pop-up sarcophagi in particular are tough to react to effectively), but as long as you manage your health and occasionally stop to top off ammo as well, you should be okay.
This leaves the rest of the gameplay, which is an absolute blast. It cribs heavily from Super Metroid; even the dash mechanic works similarly here. You may look like a military dude, but really, it has to be Samus Aran under the armor. If you're going to crib, though, crib from the best. Exploring is fun, and seeing the sights really just brings home the next point...
...about how gorgeous the pixel art is. This is sort of top-tier artwork you might have hoped to see from the best 32-bit sprite-based games of yesteryear. The gameplay might be Metroid, but the graphical patina is pure Castlevania, and it works wonderfully.
To top off the package, the soundtrack by Monomer fits the action perfectly, and is worth listening to even outside of the game. A haunting sort of synthwave and chiptune mix is on tap here, and while WayForward often likes to tap Jake Kaufman for their soundtracks (see Bloodrayne Betrayal), Monomer was absolutely the right man for the job here.
Perhaps my only real quibble with the game is that bosses don't feel terribly challenging overall. If you explore enough, they shouldn't pose a huge threat. That, and the game is short; I finished in 4.5 hours. Still, Metroid fans will easily get their money's worth.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
