The Long Reach is an adventure game filled with colorful characters, puzzles, and a shock of discovery. Wait, weren't we supposed to say “joy of discovery”? That can’t be right.

The Long Reach takes place in New Hampshire, in the fictional town of Baervox. The game draws its inspiration from Lone Survivor and The Cave and all the classical adventures (except that The Long Reach is set in the present day). You don't play in a post-apocalyptic world or explore a fairy-filled fantasy world. You’re in the thick of it, just around the corner from the place where you buy your groceries.

  • The Long Reach is a horror-thriller hell bent on screwing with your perception of things.
  • The game misuses stunning pixel art to create gruesome and unsettling images.
  • You’ll be playing as Calvin throughout the game - this is an example of the lies and deception that we have in store for you.
  • You won’t be forced to figure everything out. Escape if you wish, in fact we encourage you to run for your life!
  • Solve puzzles that require thinking outside the box. The box provided by our publisher was never used during the development.
  • You’ll be able to talk with plenty of characters. In fact, you’ll have a chance to pitch in every five lines or so.
  • A classic adventure game inventory filled with keys and weird stuff (note: no Elvish swords glowing faintly blue when evil is close in this game).
  • Original atmospheric and haunting soundtrack. The composer's not right in the head, he brought weird stuff home to use in the soundtrack. We’re all concerned for his cat.

i guess

Great pixel art depicting a really wretched narrative. Don't get me wrong, the dialogue and writing are all fine and amusing, but I could not stand the plot at all. The player is railroaded into a hallucination-based narrative that doesn't really do much with itself besides insinuate that what you're doing doesn't matter, because the game is on rails and you're just the cowcatcher shoving errant bovine puzzles out of the plot's way. Another game based in Silent Hill 2's lineage that has trouble riding the line between putting the player in another's shoes and bamboozling them with some dingdong's ill-defined, science-fiction-influenced mental breakdown. I mean, what is it about mental illness that attracts young writers? Truly one of the most difficult things to address in a way that doesn't make an audience wonder why they are still listening to the crazy guy at the bus stop. What is anyone supposed to get out of any of this besides 1) being crazy sucks, and 2) scientists can get up to the darndest things. It's a game that dares to ask: what if there was a science machine that made people lose their god damn MINDS??? And it pretty much plays out like you would expect it to. But hey, it's ok for a first effort. It's aesthetically tight, and there are interesting threads buried under all of the cruft; threads that I think a writer (or team) less distracted by gimmicks and more comfortable with exploring themes could do a lot with. It's a game that has something to say about America, or technology, or the ethical boundaries of research vis-a-vis military funding, or something; just not a lot. The team is from Dnipro, Ukraine, so maybe it's all an allegory for what's going on over there, but then...do that instead. Why set it in New Hampshire? That's not even where Boston is, where a company like this would actually exist. Augh. I have to stop thinking about this.

Freshman Effort Worth Trying

If you've read the other reviews you've picked up on the controls. Yes they feel like an odd choice, but the only thing that really annoyed me was the need to press esc to stop reading notes, rather than just pressing the same key (enter) you used to read it. Otherwise they're very logical, a and d to move left and right, enter to interact, i for inventory, space to move conversations on and F for flashlight. As for the game itself, I played the very short demo first, which managed to do something unusual, it get me hooked wanting to know what caused the opening events I played through. From there it builds on the intrigue building to something of a feverish dream as it builds to the conclusion. The game itself is only around 3-4 hours long depending on your ability to solve puzzles, most of which are fairly straightforward although there are a couple that are just trial and error to solve. There is also a bit of action which sometimes feels like it gets in the way as you explore the area to solve puzzles, but once you get the trick of it is as minor annoyance. I do have to mention the soundtrack, which does add nicely to the atmosphere and tension, especially the version of Jingle Bells used in the game. Overall as a first release it's a decent little game for fans of horror/sci-fi adventures.

Interesting Game

Bought it on a whim hoping it would be a fun little romp. The story was kind of meh and the sistuations are bland to generic. I do like what they tried to attempt with the game, but it fell a bit flat for me. Some of the puzzles seemed a bit convoluted for their own good, but nothing you can't figure out with a little thought process. I bought it when it was 3$ and I do not regret my purchase but I would be hard pressed to say it's worth any more than 5$ for what I got.

Creepy, atmospheric. Good horror music.

This game hits the mark on many levels. Background music is orchestral, tense, and there's enough of it to keep from being too repetitive. The pixel art works well. Scenes and levels are creepy. The intro is very strong, and kept me wanting to learn more for an hour or so. But it felt like there were too many doors to go through, too much backtracking, and a couple of undiscoverable things like "hit the invisible red button in the shadows to scare the psycho killer." As with most adventure games, I had to open a walkthrough to keep progressing. I think the biggest flaw was progression: it didn't feel like I was getting closer to a solution or understanding as the game went on. I made it about 75% through, then watched a longplay video for the rest. Was easily worth a few dollars for a good set-up and good artwork. The soundtrack is recommended if you like horror movie music.

It's nice, but..

This game has a great atmosphere and the story isn't that boring, but: - it's very short. It took me a couple hours of gameplay time to finish it. - it's repetitive. All you do is basically collect highlighted stuff, and use it on other highlighted stuff. No riddles, no puzzles, just grab something (a key for example), take it to some other place and use it to advance (like open a door). - There are just a couple of enemies in the entire game, and both are similar, and you just hide to avoid them. Nothing spectacular or challenging. So overall, it's a simple one-time play, not something I will be returning to, nor will I be recommending it.
