It's here at last?!?

It been 27 years and yet - this still IS one of the best horror games on PC. ...Get ready to enter the inheritance rights of the old mansion, which once served as a family nest of very powerful people, then a hospital for the insane ... Now, however, this house has become the gateway to the Other Worlds, and the Forgotten, but not weakened at all, Ancient Horrors are ready infiltrate our world. Get ready to meet their servants face to face - but remember: some Creatures cannot be killed by mortal weapons and only your mind can defeat them - IF you guess how. Nevertheless, you will also have to work with your hands - you have a whole arsenal at your disposal, starting from a broken bottle and ending with a chainsaw (to which you have to look for gasoline). Do not forget to add to this list several playable characters, a rather cumbersome skill system (which, of course, can be developed), usable and powerfull magic, a clever plot, non-trivial boss fights - and, of course, terrible screams that your character will make when he/she stumbles upon creatures of darkness. The disadvantages of the game are understandable - long-outdated graphics, slow gameplay, uncomfortable controls, some audio bugs and, of course, the very tests for your mind that I mentioned above. Nevertheless, this is a unique and still largely unsurpassed game. Play The Legacy - you will not regret the experience.

Refreshing horror classic.

I've been waiting for this to show up on GOG for years just so I could finally buy it officiall. I don't know how to describe aside from saying it's like a dungeon crawling, 1st person survival horror, but that doesn't feel like I'm doing it justice. I just get engrossed everytime I play this game. From the atmosphere, the interface, the unique puzzles and items and the slowly unraveling mystery: I can't say enough good things about this game. The only downside is it leaves me wanting more games like it, but I think too much time has passed to recapture the magic from this game's era. If any of that piques your interest, you're not likely to be disappointed.

A hidden... rock.

Some games do lose their luster with age. Being praiseworthy not due to potentially ageless gameplay design or art direction, but simply by being graphically or technologically impressive at the time. Realm of Terror is one of those games, pretty well received in 1993 because of how impressive its monster models and visuals were, but the quality was unfortunately purely technical. This means you won't get much interesting world-design or scenery, and could only be impressed by immersing yourself in the actual year 1993, instead of the game. The majority of the game consists of repetitive hallways with, again contemporarily impressive, but very basic textures. The number of really notable or creepy locations can be counted on one hand. The gameplay is simply a standard dungeon crawler, but of sub-par quality. The models move around awkwardly and very slowly, to shoot them with a gun you need to first click the "aim" button next to your character and then their model, and whenever you do you will be greeted with an ear-piercing sound effect until they dematerialize. Another pervasive annoyance is that when pressing RMB to open a menu, simply letting it go counts as a click, meaning misclicks are very common. Some people might praise the apparent complexity of the character designer, but in reality it's simply the usual level of customization you might see in a party-based dungeon crawler, but squished into a single character. The story is again something you can imagine would be impressive for its time, or as somebody's first horror game. You have the traditional horror into lovecraftian horror progression, which is always fun. But in this case the foreshadowing for this is poorly done as the very few notes in the game pretty much spell it out for you. Lastly, and most distractingly, the game constantly flickers as you move around. I'm not sure if this is due to the GOG version or if it was a problem at launch, but it earns the game its 2 stars.

This game got me into HP Lovecraft

Without even realizing it, it wasnt until years later I found HP Lovecraft and the stories were SO similiar to "this game I played as a kid" Waiting for it to be 1 or 2 bucks then will get it again.

a MEH Survival-RPG-Horror-Game

At first The Legacy: Realm of Terror looks like an underrated survival-rpg-horror gem that went under the radar for the most people. At the beginning it really feels so when you have to choose your character form multiple available ones that all have different stats and abilities as well as background stories. The high hopes for a unique gameplay experience with each character and the potential for multiple unique playthroughs are sadly quickly beaten down when you notice that the background story doesn´t have any individual meaning and you can reset all the stats and abilities and freely change them to your liking. That means which starting character you choose is purely cosmetic! Than you start the game and notice the inventory system which is very limited. You can hold one item of any size in each hand and additional carry 4 small sized items in your pockets. Body armour, helmets and trinkets are carried directly and this items are shown on the character portrait. All in all the inventory system is good and not draging around 10 weapons plus 500 bullets adds alot to the immersion factor. Unfortunately the enemies and the appearance of the mansion more often disturbe the immersion and horror feeling as adding something positive to them. The artwork of the enemies isn´t very great and it isn´t because the game is old it just simple not good. In particular the animations are very bad. Often the enemies fail to produce a attack animation while attacking and when they do the animation clumsy or cheap. No dead/pain animation and no corpse left behind but enemies are often stuck in walking animations. The mansion on the otherside is mostly plain and empty failing to produce the right atmosphere but at least there is a good automap. Moreover the skills and abilities are unbalanced as well as the itemisation. Like the sleep and hunger system which is barely used at all. At least the story isn´t really worth talking about. Nothing special here! I would buy it!
