Introduction :

The Fall of the Dungeon Guardians is an RPG Dungeon Crawler game, in First Person View, inspired by classics like Dungeon Master™ and Might & Magic®, but featuring a modern tactical combat based on the triptych “tank/damage dealer/healer” mechanism coupled with the threat & aggro system and an active pause.

Story :

You’re a newly employed guard of a prison deep inside a dungeon. The night of your arrival, strange things happen and when you wake up in the morning, all prisoners have escaped amidst chaos. The warden wisely decides to leave the dungeon as quickly as possible, while tasking you to run after the escaping prisoners. You then assemble your team and venture into the mysterious dungeon.

A Call For Adventure :

Enter a big, massive dungeon, full of danger, mystery and secrets.
Fight your way through hordes of enemies and powerful creatures.
Explore intricate corridors, underground palaces, mines fallen into oblivion and evil crypts.
Solve puzzles, avoid deadly traps, uncover hidden passages, and keep your bearing through mazes & hallways.

Character Building :

You’ll take command of a party of 4 guardians. Each guardian comes with a set of spells & abilities, with new ones appearing over the course of the adventure.
For each new level reached, the guardians get a point to use in their talent trees, allowing them to reinforce their abilities or gain new powers.
There are 4 classes to choose from: the warrior, the healer, the mage & the rogue. Each class has 3 specializations represented by a talent tree, and each specialization comes with its own set of abilities. So you have 12 base build-ups. In addition, your guardians can choose freely to spend their talent points in any of the 3 specializations of their class, allowing for even more varied set-ups.

The dungeon is filled with loot: epic armors, legendary weapons and mystical, magical items. Often when you kill a group of enemies, they’ll drop a random piece of equipment that one of your guardians can use, raising more and more of their powers.

Evolved Combat System :

The combat is focused on the triptych “tank/damage dealer/healer” mechanism, coupled with an exciting threat mechanism: your healer’s spells directly threaten all the enemies nearby, and thus your tank must use his abilities to attract their wrath and protect the healer. The tank must then be able to mitigate a lot of the enemy damage using his defensive skills.
Your last 2 guardians will be the damage dealers, trying to kill the enemies as fast as possible, while they’re busy with the tank.
All guardians get a lot of abilities and not only will using the right one at the right moment be essential to your party’s survival, but also combining different abilities in sequence to maximize their efficiency will be required to vanquish your strongest foes.
It sounds like a lot, but fortunately the game comes with an active pause: you can pause the game whenever you feel like it, check everything, queue the next abilities for your guardians, and then resume the game.

You don’t like tanks, or you don’t like pausing the game? No problem, just lower the game difficulty, and you’ll be able to play without a real tank or pausing. You can precisely tune the difficulty at any time during your exploration.

Unlike old-school FPV Dungeon Crawlers, you don’t have to strafe-turn-strafe-turn all the time in Dungeon Guardians. Your tank comes with serious defensive skills (armor, dodge & parry) that let him handle most of the enemy attacks, as long as the healer backs him up. So most fights are done while standing your ground.
However, occasionally your whole party will have to dodge some extremely powerful enemy attacks, usually by walking back, so you’ll still need some moving reflexes and awareness of your surroundings during the fights.

Built-in Map editor & Modding :

The game comes with a full featured map editor, letting you create your own dungeons. The basics are very simple, but a bit of learning will be required to handle the more advanced puzzle mechanisms.
Additionally, with the Modding SDK, you’ll be able to fine-tune the existing enemies, classes, specializations, abilities, talents, gear, and enchantments, and with a bit of dedication you should be able to add your own, and even add sound FX or music.

Game Features :

  • 4-character Party
  • Grid-based movement : your party moves 1 square at the time, and turns by a quarter
  • First person view
  • 4 classes, 12 specializations
  • 5 playable races : human, dwarf, elf, dark elf, halfling
  • Active pause (ie: you can pause the game and still queue commands for your party members), and numerous optional auto-pauses
  • 25-50 hours of gameplay, depending on your own skills and the difficulty settings
  • 20 bosses, each with an unique strategy
  • 100 kinds of creatures (including variations)
  • Puzzles (the few ones required to finish the game are easy to solve)
  • A lot of tactical combat
  • Built-in Map Editor & Modding support

Good enough to scratch that itch

First things first: In case you are wondering, the "enhanced edition" is the minor bugfix release 1.0j, superseded by 1.0k in 2020. Don't expect new features over the "basic" title. I played this on Steam before the GOG release, and I do recommend the game if you want to support the one-man-crew that made it happen, and because I feel there is a distinct lack of LoG-esque titles. However, there are no two ways about it: This is no Legend of Grimrock successor by a long shot. The dungeons are procedurally generated, content is repetitive, and generic with no memorable moments I can think of. Puzzles are rare and need more inspiration, graphics are monotonous with all levels looking same-ish, character generation is minimalistic, the choice of skills lacks impact, with the necromancer skills being particularly disappointing, and 90% of loot you get is borderline useless. I found the idea behind the combat interesting in theory, and barely workable in practice, as the icon mesh fest can get more than confusing real soon. The game favors the tank+healer+damage-dealer mechanic to a fault, so be sure that this is the way you like to crawl your dungeons. What little story the game has could be safely ignored. Don't expect logic or deeper meaning. The game _does_ (in theory) come with a map editor and modding capability. However, I was unable to find any mods or maps at all for the game anywhere. Thus, unless you want to mod the game yourself, don't expect to find a hidden community-generated treasure trove. That said, I still bought the game, and if you don't go in expecting more content and polish than the price tag suggests, you may find that you are getting exactly your money's worth. No more, no less. "Fall of the Dungeon Guardians" is a one-night-stand game. It serves a specific purpose well enough just once, demands no long-term bond to a franchise, characters, or story, and later leaves your hard drive with no obligation to return to it ever again.

Scratches a Western Blobber Itch

I played this on Steam and wish it came to GOG earlier. It's your traditional grid-based blobber/dungeon crawler with switch puzzles and the like. It does two things that sets it apart. One is the combat. It's reminiscent of MMO's like World of Warcraft, but also an option of real-time-with-pause or slowdown-time. The classes have your traditional tank, healer, and dps roles with cooldowns on the skills, but you don't necessarily have to adhere to that depending on your party makeup. There are various classes and subclasses to add variety to subsequent runs or restarts. The second thing it does well is the difficulty settings. They are very in-depth, and you can customize the combat to be as easy or hard as you want. Don't get this game if you are looking for a deep narrative. It also runs a bit longer than it probably should considering what's there, but don't dismiss this game. If you want to crawl dungeons in a grid to see that grid map fill out, and you want a combat system that isn't seen in this type of game, give it a try. This was done by a lone dev, but it was clearly a passion project of the time.

Scratches that Dungeon Master Itch!

My favorite dungeon crawler of all time is FTL's Dungeon Master on the Apple IIGS. I remember playing it in the dark and having some jump scares, and fighting the dragon (well, kiting him around the pillar) was thrilling for teenage me. FotDG is close enough for a modern version. I fell in love with it years ago when I originally bought it on Steam. It wasn't on GOG, so I went to the developer's web site and bought it directly there as well, so I could have a downloaded DRM-free version. And now, it's finally on GOG... so I've purchased it yet again to support the dev. That's how much I love this game. Even better, it's totally cross platform, so Mac and Linux users don't need to feel left out! "Fall of the Dungeon Guardians" captures the spirit of classic dungeon crawlers like FTL's Dungeon Master, while adding modern enhancements that make it a standout experience. The grid-based movement and first-person perspective evoke nostalgia, but the real-time-with-pause combat introduces a level of strategy and depth that feels fresh and engaging. The game’s focus on party management and class customization is a major strength. With various classes and specializations, it offers much more flexibility and replayability than older titles, allowing for unique strategies and party builds. The dungeon environments are rich and atmospheric, filled with puzzles and traps that challenge your problem-solving skills. Exploring these labyrinths feels rewarding, just as in the classic games. Visually, the game combines retro charm with modern aesthetics, offering crisp graphics that still feel familiar. The atmospheric soundtrack further enhances the immersive experience. "Fall of the Dungeon Guardians" honors the legacy of classic dungeon crawlers while standing out on its own. Whether you're a longtime fan of the genre or new to it, this game offers a rich, satisfying experience.

Unique, fun and filled with secrets

I've got some 30+ hours into Fall of the Dungeon Guardians on Steam and it's one of my favorite dungeon crawlers. It's really well made, the combat is unique for this type of game and the boss fights are consistently challenging as well as varied. Instead of spamming a button to swing your sword, fire an arrow or cast a spell, your four party members -- all controlled by you, Dragon Age style -- use abilities. They gain points as they level and spend them to obtain the abilities, giving you more choice and flexibility on your playstyle than any dungeon crawler I've played. You've got a tank, two DPS and a healer, and each class has three different specializations you can put points into. In that sense, yes, it's like WoW or other MMOs, but it's also got a tactical pause that's really necessary when fighting some of the more difficult bosses, especially since you're controlling an entire party. That part of the combat is like the Dragon Age series. The game also has a robust loot system with epic weapons and gear dropping from bosses. Instead of generic weapons with different numbers on them, like you'd find in most dungeon crawlers, these weapons are named, thoughtfully designed and have unique attributes. The result of all these unconventional -- for the genre -- features is a dungeon crawler in which the combat is a lot more difficult and fun than similar games, requiring you to think about how you're going to fight bosses and which abilities you'll choose. Likewise, the puzzle elements are intuitive, and hints reveal themselves if you really look at what's in front of you and pay attention to details. If you like dungeon crawlers and you like the combat of Dragon Age with the specialization fexibility of an MMO, you'll probably really enjoy this game.
