The King... of microwaved comfort food.
This game should be forever remembered as THE milestone video game industry - in spin doctor marketing and producing the ultimate fast food dish od the cRPG variety. It lures you in with it's superficial qualities, but offers no nutritional value - just a carefully measured amount of salt, sugar and fat. It fools only the least developed taste buds and people who eat with their eyes, while offering quick hunger-fixing slop. The most impressive part of this dish is the tray that it's served on, i.e. the game's world. Bethesda's world builders are (were?) among the best in the industry and up to a point (Starfield) it worked in every Bethesda game, Skyrim included. But once you get past it, there's nothing of value left. I don't know who coined the term "wide as an ocean, shallow as a puddle" but it perfectly encapsulates this game in it's entirety. The only way I can explain this game's "legendary" status as an RPG is rose-tinted glasses of people who never played a good RPG before (and possibly after) Skyrim and they were most likely teenagers when they first got their hands on the game. Nothing wrong with that. If I had never read the entire Witcher saga and played all the games in the series, I too can see myself enjoying the Netflix series, not knowing any better without a point of reference. Same goes for Skyrim and every single Bethesda developed game after that. Truth is, it's barely an RPG, the story feels like it was written by a MySpace dwelling teenager and quest design is outright insulting, treating the player like a mentally deficient invalid. At so many points in the game you can see a glimmer of potential for something truly remarkable, just to get disillusioned 5 minutes later by being served microwaved food with no taste whatsoever. If you're looking for a "make your own adventure" sandbox, ignore the story, childish quest design and thousands of still unfixed bugs, Skyrim may just scratch that itch. Just install the unofficial community patch.

Broken Game as of Dec 2020
I've been playing GOG Skyrim for a year and after the recent Bethesda update, the game crashes on start. This game seems more like a scam at this point. It's not worth playing without Nexus mods and now it doesn't work with those mods, or it doesn't work at all. I've spent more time trouble shooting the game than playing the game, and that's when it was working at all. Now it just doesn't work.

How did it get this bad?
If this is your first Bethesda game you might get caught up in the magic of an open-world. Morrowind was a fun but technically flawed game that put Bethesda on the map. Oblivion was a dumbed down version of Morrowind with a slightly improved graphics engine. By selling out to console design Oblivion was more successful in sales than Morrowind. It was a less fun game in every way especially with all the magic nerfs. Unfortunately, they continued this design strategy to the point Skyrim is like "RPGs for Dummies". If you do purchase this just get the Special Edition. The additional fan created content in the Anniversary Edition is absolutely terrible and was a nightmare to complete.
