The best version of Skyrim that exists

DRM-free is wonderful! This GOG release is a wonderful thing for GOG to do, it's a perfect example of what makes GOG so great. I'm really enjoying GOG's release. Skyrim is obviously in the mid-to-low range in terms of Role Playing quality, but Bethesda still made it much more fun to play than most other RPG games. The combat system can be fun, but 10% skill-choice & strategy, 20% hack & slash and 70% obtaining new weapons/enchantments. Other cons: many worthless spells, a poorly implemented two-hand control system. Bethesda's combination of cheesy story, stupid characters and bad voice acting could have been worse, but I'm not sure how (I suggest that you, at various points in the main quest coversations, after you finish your Hard Cringe, save the game, then punch the character and reload). Oblivion was better in some ways, but less fun. Modding can only help so much... Game stability on Windows 7 or Windows 10 is excellent (some tweaks needed in Windows 7). The Steam version is less stable and takes more system resources. On multiple PCs and setups I've done testing and I can get GOG's latest version of Skyrim SE to run flawlessly without mods on Windows 7 or Windows 10. But I want mods. While DRM-free, modding was my reason for purchasing this game so I've removed 2 stars. (Bethesda's closed CK modding setup is really to blame, but that's a separate issue that I won't discount stars on this review for). Modding: There may be some tweaks I'll find to get more mods working, but after quite a lot of time and effort only about 10% of the SE mods that I have previously used can be made to work on GOG's version. A few important mods and tools that didn't work last year do work this year, fortunately. In comparison, the modding experience is way more diffficult than it was for Oblivion or Fallout 4 (I have 100% of my old mods working on those games using the version released by GOG). Hopefully this situation can be improved by some sort of compatibility patch or mod.

I wanted to love it

I just finished my first and only playtrough. I wanted to discover and explore every location, read every book, complete every quest, talk to every character but instead found myself getting more and more annoyed with the UI and the bugs until the game no longer was fun. At that point I'd already sunk over 100 hours so I tried to convince myself to keep playing but couldn't ... maybe because I expected better from a game Bugthesda has been milking for over a decade. One star for the great content (characters, locations, quests, etc.), one more for the awesome community. That's it. Sorry. I lack the time, the patience and the tolerance.

Todd has spoken. Skyrim must be released again. It is our sacred duty to buy it again. As many times as is necessary to fund Fallout in Space. Do it. You know you want to. You can't resist your natural instinct to consume media. Do not disappoint us.

Older than FO4 and it shows, even the AE

Where to start? I'd been pulled in by all the hype - oh the pretty scenery and quests etc. But no wetness and other graphics seem older and buggier compared to FO4. Sure, mods can help, but things like SSEedit doesn't work out-of-the-box with GOG (see forums for how I got it working). Then there's the fighting - oh dear, hack and hope. And don't expect ironsights in 1st person (i.e. you don't look down the arrow/xbow bolt during aiming). Mods can help with the ironsighting but not the hacking. True, FO4 meleeing is only slightly better but then most players are also shooting too and that's done brilliantly compared to Skyrim. Death-shots and animations are buggy - oh yes, I'm sure mods might help but for an Anniversary Edition they should've fixed it. Even FO3 was miles better than this! Dungeons have something to them - the mini-puzzles are def better than Fallout's hacking, but I'm sure after a while that'll get old as the ones I've seen so far haven't differed much between themselves conceptually. I also find the names of places, things and people often silly and seem too forced/made-up, but then sadly that's typical in 95% of fantasy games, films and books that aren't super-deep in lore like say Lord of the Rings. This would be semi-forgiveable if at least the writing style in the books had some effort but sadly the prose is too modern - imagine a kid pretending to write in ye olde English but missing badly most of the time and often not really bothering at all. The quests! Oh the quests - oh no, the quests. Sorry, the smaller side quests are just as simple and hackneyed as Fallout's, and the main quest lines/choices no better really. Maybe if I'd played Skyrim first I'd have been ok with it, but having played FO4 first which is oft-maligned on this score I must say it's better than Skyrim. Sorry. Get the game on sale and mod it up to bearable for some long winter nights if and when you're bored.

Skyrim was great

Back in 2011, I liked Skyrim a lot, I sank many hours in this game, and it was mostly good fun. The world was quite nice designed, and it felt like a sandbox experience, which I like. Especially with the mods, I had tons of fun. However, the roleplay aspect is pretty repetitive and shallow. And the main story line is laughable short. But besides that it was a pretty good experience and I definitely did not regret buying this game on release. But Skyrim aged badly, and I see no reason to buy any other edition, besides big total conversion mods. And I do not recommend buying all this idiotic new versions, it mostly stays the same game. If you haven't played it, you can buy this edition, but as I said it kind of aged badly.
