The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind GOTY Edition

The game starts out a bit hard For detractors the skills are low and do not always proc and map information are not known to the player; that gives a realistic experience in my opinion, but some may not like it. There is an issue with alchemy which is caused by running multiple cores that glitches that skill in the port. It usually will insist that you haven't named your potions. The graphics are dated, as is anything from twenty or more years ago. And the voice acting is a Bethesda commonplace for all of Elder Scrolls being voiced by like 5 people. Also there are text bricks where voice acting doesn't do justice to larger bits of dialogue. Talking to people or interfacing with them from the start tends to do a good bit to help alleviate map and other quest marker issues but if you have low charisma or speechcraft or barter skills it usually will only get you the bare minimum or they'll outright admit you're not worth their time to talk to. Aside those detractors, the lore is deep, the world is very explore-able and vast with random encounters. The storyline and racial quirks of each specie are well thought out even in the conflicts between specie. Exception there being cliff racers which definitely should be purged by your holy fire at some point. There are many tongue in cheek jokes and easter-eggs hidden about. The ability to craft spells and items makes it very user friendly to replay and long term game play. Unlike later Elder Scrolls titles you can levitate, jump beyond normal height, and do many things they hadn't capped or removed from the later editions... Like summoning more than one creature in a single summon spell. Many of the places will have some degree of feeling lived in as is common for the genre, and in some cases like Solstheim there is a beauty which kind of has a verisimilitude to the world we know. As for the sky graphics... kudos to the artist, they're always nice. Overall... great game. Worth trying if you've patience to get through it.

More freedom than any of the other games, the late game can drag a little as you have to fulfill quests for the various Tribes, but it still amazing. Morrowind deserves an update more than Skyrim ever has.

The game world and atmosphere is amazing in this game. I'm giving it 4/5 instead of 5/5 because of the many, many bugs in it. The combat system is rather boring and bare-bones, but that's expected from a Bethesda game. You may want to install a few mods to update the graphics and fix the leveling system - try asking on the reddit forum for morrowind.

Morrowind was my first of many things. Not only was it my first exposure to the Elder Scrolls series, it was also: My first Xbox game My first Western RPG My first FPS (in controls I mean- this game taught me how to use dual analogs) My first 100+ hours experience in a single week My first video game soundtrack that I listened to OUTSIDE of the game. (I'm listening to 'Blessing of Vivec' as I type this.) Lastly, this is my first truly nostalgic experience. I don't remember the story from Super Mario World or Sonic the Hedgehog, but I do remember getting completely lost outside of Seyda Neen, coming across an elf falling from the sky. And how cliff racers killed me more than any other enemy in the game. I remember the little moments that are likely not relevant to the main story. The personal missions that weren't assigned to me from the game. So much freedom... Morrowind is an absolute treat of an experience. I probably invested over 1000 hours almost 20 years ago, but it breaks my heart a little to go back now. It hasn't aged terribly, but it can be difficult to transition back into a game that just throws you in the world and tells you to survive. Oblivion was awesome, and Skyrim was fantastic, but Morrowind will always have the largest piece of my heart.

I really love this game. The graphics have aged, the gameplay mechanics as well but its charm is still the same after 23 years.
