Why has the reclusive Colonel Dijon called his rivalrous relations together? It's a mysterious re-union at his secluded mansion, deep in the bayous of Southern Louisiana!
It is the year 1925, and the roaring '20s are well underway. As Laura Bow, young college student, you've been invited to visit the Colonel's isolated estate. Watch as the Colonel announces his intention to bequeath his millions to all present!
Immediately, you sense greed and suspicion among the Colonel's relatives and associates. The air becomes thick with anger and betrayal. As the drama unfolds you must evade the dangers that await you everywhere, and expose the killer before he or she strikes again!
Explore the gloomy estate in an attempt to discover who is murdering the Colonel's guests, and why...
As in the title, it is required to play the game, each time you have to find a matching fingerprint in order to play the game. The game says the fingerprints are in the documentation, well they are not attached. I had to find them on the web and have to match each time I launch the game. Due to poor quality I fail more then I wished. Dear GOG, is this really necessary? Ruins whole game experience and wastes a lot of time.
I would not like to think how many years ago I first played - and completed - this game. When I saw it here on GOG, I became just a little intrigued. Could I possibly enjoy playing an adventure game from the late 1980's. Well, now I can give that question a resounding YES!!! The feeling of achievement on giving Laura Bow a useful command, with what nowadays may appear like a Tweet, is palpable. The graphics are charming and surprisingly effective. The sound is also used amazingly well. This is a game about small details. The plot is clearly influenced by Agatha Christie - And Then There Were None in particular. It is also a game about people. Having just played over 69 hours of a modern medieval strategy game that relies upon you influencing other, it was somewhat remarkable to see the roots of such gaming ideas at play in this much overlooked adventure.
You can not ask this game to provide stunning visuals, however if your are a fan of mystery, rich characters and mansion full of secrets, please spend a little of your hard earned cash on The Colonels Bequest - I promise you will not be disappointed!!!
To this day, I absolutely love this game! I replay this game, probably once a year. I don't always play to finish; but I typically walk around talk to people, spy on them; there's so many things that you can do with this game. I feel like each time I play, I've done something differently. Definitely recommend this game. Very fun.
My favorite sierra game so far.
I like this game a lot. As a kid i always wanted to play this on my amiga but i never dare to play it, it had a very creepy atmospehre. Now i instant bought it to finaly play it again.
I'm sort of late on the bandwagon on the Sierra adventures games.
I was aware that many of these games had a reputation for being frustrating and obtuse, but The Colonel's Bequest is, in fact, the best experience I've had with Sierra. Maybe starting with the notoriously murderous Space Quest wasn't the best idea, but hindsight is 20/20.
Anyway, having just finished TCB for the first time, I'm legitimately impressed by it in all aspects:
The attention to graphical detail is incredible, the characters are believable, there's a highly convincing atmosphere about the game (thanks to the solid art direction), and the story keeps you moving and guessing what's going on while never feeling drawn out or confusing. The more you engage with it, you more you get out of it.
I find it refreshing to have an adventure game that focuses more on intrigue rather than bizarre puzzles to bring you along. You do actually feel like you're piecing together events as they go down without the game holding your hand, like reading an Agatha Christie story. I now want to hunt out more games that do this sort of investigative gameplay.
Then there's setting: I'm a sucker for old mansions in games, but Misty Acres has it all - history, telling background details, secrets and moments of genuine horror that are paced exceptionally well. Easily a top ten game locale for me.
I thought I'd be griping about the controls, but not at all. The movement works (tap an arrow to move a direction, tap again to stop), the text parser is a clever interface that makes you to think about how to phrase inputs and gives you plenty of interaction options. On that, the amount of flavour text is unreal and it shows just how the developers thought of the fun small things just like you, the player, might as you explore e.g. attempt to kiss everyone and everything in the game.
In conclusion, The Colonel's Bequest is an impressive gem of a game that deserves far more attention today. Especially for mystery lovers.
