During the eternal struggle of the Alliance of Free Races against the Army
of Shadows, an aged gremlin archaeologist Mortimer MacGuffin discovers the
secret repository that houses a legendary artifact! Knowing that this
ancient treasure could turn the tide of war, the Army of Shadows sends
their best agents to seize it. At the same time four unlikely heroes from
the Alliance are drawn into the crisis: a cute gnome Wilbur, a stunningly
attractive wood elf princess Ivo, and a brash pirate Nate with his furry
companion, the mysterious Critter.
The Book of Unwritten Tales is a classic point-and-click adventure game
with a cornucopia of humorous references. Whether it gently lampoons a
particularly popular MMO or the stereotypical fantasy conventions, it’s
sure to put a knowing smile on the face of even the most hardened
adventurer! If you're looking for a comedic relief from all the super-serious plots of modern games, this beautifully-presented point-and-click adventure will be perfect for you.
Travel through a beautifully presented world that is a twisted image of almost every popular fantasy land you’ve visited in games, movies, and books.
Help a pack of hapless heroes to solve over 150 mind-boggling puzzles and discover more than 300 items that can be used and combined.
Meet a cast of crazy characters - from two-headed ogres and vegetarian dragons to good-natured zombies.
It's not a new game, it's older than many people think. That's why although it is not extremely popular it has quite a strong fan base. And for a good reason. It's one of the best adventures in terms of funny characters and story telling. The rest like puzzles or graphics are not so outstanding but kind of support the good game. I really liked it a lot when I played it years ago and I consider rebuying here.
I bought the game boxed and play the german version - so I can't say anything about the gog release itself. But I wouldn't know, why it should be any less good :)
The game itself is very funny - sometimes a little bit too much out for the yoke. But the very nice references on RPGs and fantasy stories make it a really enjoyable game with solvable puzzles and an especially awesome/twisted last chapter (makes me smile a little to think about it again)!
Just want to clear up the incorrect information posted by Trilarion. Although this game has nearly the same title as the one released by Dreamcatcher in 2010, they are not the same game. The game released by Dreamcatcher is titled, "Book of Unwritten Tales: The Chronicles."
That being said, it is one of the most completely enjoyable adventure games I've played in a very long time. Some of the references to adventure game cliches had me laughing out loud. The voice acting was particularly good in this game too, with the translation from German being excellent. I highly recommend this game for all the reasons we love adventure games!
To begin with, I have to say the graphism is good - maybe not the most extraordinary style, but it's well executed. So is the music. The lenght is reasonable, 20 h maybe.
The characters are well made, all of them - not only the three you control. A lot of memorable characters with back stories, the universe feels habited. And there are nice dialogues, enough funny descriptions too make this a nice P&C game.
I'm more sceptic about the puzzles, that are very directive. Sometimes you just have to go and exhaust al conversation topic of character A, then character B then back to A and you're done. And some times you just have to take all the items on the screen, combine them togeter and voila. The puzzle part doesn't ask you to be smart or anything, it's a real weak spot of the game.
Then, the references will please you - or not. A bit of Star Wars, some LOTR, a whole scene stolen fron Fate of Atlantis, another one from Monkey Island (twice), a character from the Diskworld, Oh, Lechuck. Oh, a bit of WOW. the game is FULL of those stuff. I found it funny at the begining, but tedious after a while. Somtimes it's trying to be funny by connivance, sometimse it's just stealing the funny parts of older games. Your mileage might vary, but be aware of that, you will like it or hate it.
All that didn't prevented me from enjoying the game, but it's far from a perfect game - you might shake your head a few time.
This game is great. The puzzles are challenging but not that annoying adventure game type where things just don't make sense. There were times I'd get confused about how to solve the situation but after messing around a bit I would be able to figure it out. I normally have a low threshold for tolerance for tedious or inane adventure game puzzles, so the fact that I enjoyed this game speaks volumes. The art is fantastic. The English voice overs are very well done, totally professional. Not as funny as I would have hoped for but it's good enough. Those looking for a fun and not annoying adventure game with great graphics should check it out.
Why not 5 stars? People are too quick to give 5 stars on GOG. 5 out of 5 means unable to be perfected in any way. It's 100%. The game has some minor annoyances, and the story can sometimes be a little cheesy (and not in an endearing way). But it's certainly not enough to detract from the rest of the experience which is quite enjoyable. 4/5 is a high rating in my book, as I tend to rate rather harshly.
For those adventure fans that grew up playing the more silly titles like Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, etc, you'll find this title well worth the money.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
