Fun to play, "refreshed" version
This game is in fact the second attempt in terms of "refreshing" the classic North vs South (mix of mini-games and simplistic turn-based strategy). The previous version, released in 2012, had changed some mini-games (attacks on train and attacks on a fort), plus changed the control during battles (made entirely by mouse, closer to classic RTS games). This version is visually very similar to the game from 2012 but has some significant changes. The control in battles is again more "arcade-style", like in the original. Mini-games with train attack and fort attack are again changed, this time in form of... FPS game. Yup, you're attacking (or defending) the train/fort by yourself, in form of a very simplistic shooter game. I'm surprised, but despite simplicity (AI of the enemy is not superb), those sections are quite fun to play. Battles are, as always, enjoyable, even if short and sometimes a bit hectic. The strategic map is clear, general premises from the original game are present, maybe aside from the fact that you're deciding by yourself if you wish to buy a new squad (and that it's cheaper than in original), plus a couple of other bonuses you can buy during your turn (like protection from weather or Indians/Mexicans attack). You can also try some mini-games (alone or with second-player) separately, in "additional" game modes - nice idea, allowing to learn them better. Of course, the game has 2 player options, but in this case, the second player has to use a controller. This part, together with the lack of online/LAN multiplayer is the reason why I gave 4/5 stars. Basically, FPS sections are much better to play with mouse and keyboard, and with local multiplayer only, one of the players will have to use a controller. Plus, I really wish I could play this game with other people around the world. What a shame... Still, very enjoyable game, totally worth buying during some promo/discount.
