The Age of Decadence is an isometric, turn-based, single-player role-playing game set in a low magic, post-apocalyptic fantasy world, inspired by the fall of the Roman Empire. The game features a detailed skill-based character system, multiple skill-based ways to handle quests, choices & consequences, and extensive dialogue trees.

Traditionally, many fantasy RPGs are about killing things, clearing up dungeons, and being a hero. Now, there is nothing wrong with mindless fun and wish fulfillment, but we serve a different meal here. Quoting from one of the reviews:

“Well, if you want a hardcore, heavy metal roleplaying experience that challenges you, this is the ticket. Otherwise, take a pass. The game is vicious, both in its lack of morality and its merciless systems. If you want to be the hero of a story, run and don’t look back. If you want to be Attia of the Julii or be a power player, this is your RPG.”

The focus of the game is not on killing monsters, but rather on dealing with fellow humans and factions, trying to survive – easier said than done – and making a name for yourself. Naturally, to accommodate all that scheming, plotting, and backstabbing, we give the player plenty of choices, from multiple solutions to quests to different paths you can take through the game. You (and your actions) will determine who your friends and enemies are. There are no default good and bad guys.
  • 23 skills, ranging from Dagger and Critical Strike to Disguise and Persuasion to Alchemy and Lore.
  • Tactical combat system, featuring a flexible set of standard attacks, special attacks such as whirlwind and impale, and aimed attacks at different body parts.
  • 8 weapon types: daggers, swords, axes, hammers, spears, bows, crossbows, throwing weapons, each with individual traits.
  • Non-combat quest resolutions and a well-developed diplomatic path.
  • Over 100 quests, taking you to 20 locations: towns, outposts, archeological digs, sealed places of Power, underground facilities, and temples.
  • Each situation has multiple ways of handling it, based on your skills, reputation, and connections.
  • An interesting world with rich history and unclear future that your actions can shape into seven very different game endings.
  • Detailed crafting and alchemy systems: forge your own weapons with different properties, brew different potions, experiment with Greek's fire and black powder.
  • Hundreds of items, ranging from weapons and armor to scrolls, tools, flasks, and pre-war relics.

Old school with a twist

This game is tough so if you want a nice easy RPG then this isn't the game for you, if you want to click you way through dialogue and get to the action this isn't the game for you, you WILL have to read the dialogue if you want to progress, nothing will be handed to you on a plate you will have to work for it. To deal with a some of the criticism, this game is old school so you will make mistakes, find you made bad choices and you may also find your self restarting as you learn how the game works, you may feel you have been rail roaded into making decisions but if you commit to a conversation then its just like real life you cannot back out just because it has become inconvenient. The game is not forgiving, you choices really do have consequences and can effect how NPC's will react to you and what content will become available, one decision can mean that a whole quest line will be missed and for me this is one of the things that is so good about AoD, several play throughs will be needed to fully experience the content. Lore is superb and presented from different perspectives for different character types, the background to the world is detailed and relevant to you adventure often shaping the views of people you meet along the way, AoD is a very political game and how you decide to play one faction against the other is entirely up to you, treachery is not uncommon. Dialogue is interesting and rewarding as often a somewhat innocuous conversation can glean a vital piece of information that you were not expecting or educates you increasing stats or giving you skill points to spend. Combat is tough but somewhat enjoyable and smooth for turn based, to be avoided unless you are geared like a tank. Stats are the be all and end all, you cannot be a jack of all trades in AoD, you will soon figure out what is important for the class you choose so choose wisely. If you like old school RPG's and are looking for something different this is the game for you.

Great old school cRPG

In depth combat and skill system. Lots of options with completely different story outcomes based on skill selection and dialog choices. Great reply value. In-fact you cannot experience the whole story with one character as many paths are closed to you if you don't have the correct skill/attribute set. Fun play through as an idiot murder hobo and as a charismatic gritter.

Wasnt expecting this to be so good

"oh, its a rpg in old roman empire entourage, probably about caesar and all that" BOY was i wrong after around 30 minutes in the first area. This is a story driven true rpg game with all that should be in a proper role-playing game: nonlinearity, several ways to solve a problem or reach any place, interesting rich story, well crafted world and characters. If you can pass the clearly outdated (but still obviously made with love) picture, you will not regret a minute playing this.

MUST PLAY for fans of golden age CRPGs

The Age of Decadence is amazing. Sadly I overlooked it at first because of the bland roman style art on the cover graphic in ads I saw when it came out. First of all it's a crpg, in the style of Planescape: Torment, Fallout and Arcanum. Yes, I believe it deserves comparison to those amazing classic games. 10/10 Dialog, very interesting to read and tons of it, if you love crpgss you'll love this game 10/10 Gameplay, everything you could want from a classic style high quality crpg from the golden age The combat system is great too. I really can't say enough good things about this game but I need to get back to my second playthrough. If you like PS:T, Arcanum and/or Fallout, buy this game and play it.

A valiant attempt that just isn't fun

The setting and general atmosphere are excellent. The ideas behind the gameplay are worthwhile. The actual implementation is just too difficult all along the way. In order to accomplish certain tasks or survive certain situations, you need to have enough points assigned to certain skills (whether they be combat skills or non-combat); you have no way of knowing how much skill you will need for a given task until after you've tried it and failed. You spend a lot of time trying and failing things, reloading a save, allocating some points and trying again. Maybe it works the second time, maybe not; sometimes you just don't have enough skill points to get through a plot-critical situation because you didn't know you'd need points for it. The combat in particular is extremely difficult and unforgiving. I've seen a total of three fights that felt suitable in terms of difficulty; all the others have been from 20% to 50% harder than what my characters were capable of doing at that point. For example, playing a mercenary who joins the guard (using default stats and nearly all points in combat skills), when I did the plot-critical mission to take the tower, I ended up with 1 hit point left and 2 nearly undamaged enemies still to kill. I had to exploit a gimmick involving a staircase and alchemy in order to slowly wear them down, 2 to 3 hp per round. In most fights you don't have such gimmicks available and you likely just die. If you focus on talking your way out of fights, you will still run into situations where you can't avoid fighting, and then you are extremely likely to die with no combat skill; if you focus on combat skill you just keep running into harder and harder fights without having your combat skill scaling up appropriately. If you intend to complete this game, expect to have to know all the solutions and all the optimal moves and skill point allocations ahead of time. It is not possible to just play through like a normal game.
