Opis
The Age of Decadence is an isometric, turn-based, single-player role-playing game set in a low magic, post-apocalyptic fantasy world, inspired by the fall of the Roman Empire. The game features a detailed skill-based character system, multiple skill-based ways to handle quests, choices & consequences, and extensive dialogue trees.

Traditionally, many fantasy RPGs are about killing things, clearing up dungeons, and being a hero. Now, there is nothing wrong with mindless fun and wish fulfillment, but we serve a different meal here. Quoting from one of the reviews:

“Well, if you want a hardcore, heavy metal roleplaying experience that challenges you, this is the ticket. Otherwise, take a pass. The game is vicious, both in its lack of morality and its merciless systems. If you want to be the hero of a story, run and don’t look back. If you want to be Attia of the Julii or be a power player, this is your RPG.”

The focus of the game is not on killing monsters, but rather on dealing with fellow humans and factions, trying to survive – easier said than done – and making a name for yourself. Naturally, to accommodate all that scheming, plotting, and backstabbing, we give the player plenty of choices, from multiple solutions to quests to different paths you can take through the game. You (and your actions) will determine who your friends and enemies are. There are no default good and bad guys.
  • 23 skills, ranging from Dagger and Critical Strike to Disguise and Persuasion to Alchemy and Lore.
  • Tactical combat system, featuring a flexible set of standard attacks, special attacks such as whirlwind and impale, and aimed attacks at different body parts.
  • 8 weapon types: daggers, swords, axes, hammers, spears, bows, crossbows, throwing weapons, each with individual traits.
  • Non-combat quest resolutions and a well-developed diplomatic path.
  • Over 100 quests, taking you to 20 locations: towns, outposts, archeological digs, sealed places of Power, underground facilities, and temples.
  • Each situation has multiple ways of handling it, based on your skills, reputation, and connections.
  • An interesting world with rich history and unclear future that your actions can shape into seven very different game endings.
  • Detailed crafting and alchemy systems: forge your own weapons with different properties, brew different potions, experiment with Greek's fire and black powder.
  • Hundreds of items, ranging from weapons and armor to scrolls, tools, flasks, and pre-war relics.

I don't get it

I hate to say it but, this game seems a lot less like an RPG than an adventure game with the illusion of choices. It's extremely text heavy, and it seems that certain skills are virtually essential to completing the game (i.e. lore). So, a lot of possible character builds appear to actually be inviable, and if you paint yourself into a corner, so to speak, you'll have no alternative but to restart the game. Unimpressive graphics. Also, load times are a pain. They're only 10-20 seconds, but when you have to savescum your way through practically every combat encounter, it is unpleasant.

Good lore does not a good game make, mmm

Pros: Combat and mechanics are solid and varied, even if some of the features are one time use only, as the game provides you with no incentive or chance to use them. Lore and setting are genuinely good, and interesting to read about. Story and pacing are not something to write home about, but will keep you engaged all the way through. Cons: Railroading galore, reminding me more of a poorly executed "choose your own adventure" book or a D&D session where the DM is really protective of his story and therefore all unplanned branches are prone to end in a "rocks fall and everyone dies". The plot is split into rigid paths, allowing for some semblance of choice. While some of it you can skip, you will be doing yourself a disservice, as you need all the skillpoints you can get. Only of course you don't know you are skipping anything until there is no way back, as the dialogue goes on and on, railroading you into choices you don't intend to make. There are rarely more than 3 dialogue options at a time, separating into two categories: ones that move the plot and "tell me more" with skillchecks sprinkled in between. You have no idea what skillcheck will come when and failing them most of the time gives you no second chance, leading to an instant game over or a fight (read: an interactive game over for a speech focused character). Mid to late game this can halt your progress if you don't have the skills or skillpoints and need to make the check. TL;DR - there are two main ways to play this game: pure melee or, if you like punishing yourself - speech focus with liberal walkthrough usage and save scumming. Besides that expect a decent story, unique and captivating lore and constant, out of the blue railroading. Better wait for a discount.

A RPG where your choices matter!

PROs - Post apocalyptic Rome! Interesting lore that you'll actually want to read. And there's a lot to read, so if you like games like Planescape: Torment or the Shadowrun series, then you'll feel right at home. - No hour long tutorial, no lengthy cutscenes explaining what you already know, no handholding. - The combat is challenging and satisfying. You're no plot messiah who can effortlessly slay the legions of evil because you're "special." No, you're some random shmuck who'll have to earn your badass status by actually working towards it. And you will die. A lot. There's no easy victory in Age of Decadence. - Every choice has consequences. Maybe you'll avoid picking a fight with a pickpocket, since you decided to play as a bookworm who has no combat skills. Perhaps a noble refuses to speak with a murderous thug with limited people skills. Etc. - Replayablity. There are several professions you can choose with their own guilds and questlines. And a lot of dialogue, events, and even locations are locked behind skill checks. Unlike most games, each playthrough feels completely different from the last. - The writing is pretty decent. Think pulpy dark fantasy like the First Law and Black Company books. CONs - Very hardcore experience. If you must have next gen graphics, voice acting, and easy mode stay away. - Very rigid character building that doesn't feel quite as intuitive as it should be. - You will die alot. Seriously. If you want a power fantasy look elsewhere. - The game likes to teleport you from scene to scene, which is annoying. - The system encourages "saving" skill points to spend instead of playing naturally, due to the hidden skill checks.

Finished It Twice Before Reviewing It

After completing two full playthroughs of Age of Decadence I can happily say it is *arguably* the best cRPG ever made. It's more than just a game, in fact; it's a work of obsessive passion. As you play you will become enmeshed in the product of the authors' dedication. By rights AoD should be the cRPG GOTY for 2015, but of course that won't happen because Iron Tower doesn't have a huge investment company behind it to buy positive media coverage. I'll give you a little more specific information to help you decide whether or not you want to buy AoD. Essentially the game is trying to simulate a pencil-and-paper RPG experience using a computer, albeit for one solo player character. There are no "followers" or "companions." It's otherwise rather like Fallout 1 and 2, for reference, or the more recent Shadowrun games, or Wasteland 2, so if that's the kind of experience that appeals to you, you should try AoD, no question. Combat is turn-based and exceptionally good, although it can be hard until you learn how it works. On the other hand, you can play a weakling or a pacifist and avoid combat completely if you so choose. You will be forced to make difficult choices throughout the story, and the consequences of those choices can be profound. This is probably the most delightful aspect of AoD. You can re-play it over and over, backing different factions and different characters each time. Each time you will discover encounters and new outcomes. In fairness not everyone will like AoD. If you're looking for an action game where you play a superhero who can max out every skill and eventually wipe the floor with every enemy the universe has to offer, AoD is probably not for you. If you want a game that constantly tells you exactly where to go and exactly what to do when you get there, AoD is probably not for you.

One of the best CRPGs ever

An absolutely brilliant CRPG. I have not had so much fun since Witcher 3, and Morrowing before that, and Fallout 1&2 yet before MW. A very interesting story, immersive world, and I would say, totally unparalleled replayability. When you start with a different character with a different set of skills, you will be facing a _very_ different story. And yes, it makes you actually roleplay the character. A Gary Stu superman (or a Mary Sue supergirl) that is good at everything will not make it past the first fight. You have to specialise and understand how game mechanics work, and plan accordingly. This game makes you use your brains - this is where the fun comes from!
