Terraria

Well, i played the Clonk Series over 20 years ago and still do. Which is most likely the best 2D sandbox game ever made. So im not easily impressed. So about Terraria.. Having to build everything in detail, is more annoying than enriching, atleast in a 2D environment. More satisfying in 3d tho. Premades would be more favorable. Building shelter with specific conditions, unbeknownst to the player, to attract NPCs is also a questionable design choice. Despite making loads of money, enough to produce pointless Merch, the devs couldnt be bothered to improve their outdated spritework and frankly terrible music. Modders are doing are far better job, unpaid no less. Melee combat is craptastic, its even more shallow than Zelda 2 from1987. And endgame combat is just a screen filling fireworks, no depth whatsoever. Randomized loot is cool tho and there is a bunch of content. TL;DR : Go play Clonk Rage, its better, its free.

I can see my friends on steam getting the achievements in the game. There are no achievements on GOG Galaxy

Pros: Sandbox Runs On Anything (used to run even better, especially back in the 1.3.5.3 days) Lots of difficulties Secret seeds Otherworld and Normal sountrack are bops RPG Best character customization (even mid playthrough, see dresser and hair stylist and gender change potion) Blood and gore can be disabled Unbelievable return on investment ($10 for 1100+ hours of enjoyment) Stellar modding community Non mod resource packs available Works with ancient GPUs Platforming amazingness Movement is so good Lets you become a master Incredible skill ceiling 32 bit support for windows Cons: Distasteful indiredt humor about women's health Almost no ingame lore Master difficulty was not well balanced (see moss hornets, pirate's curse, and crabs) Nerfed the phoenix blaster and daedalus stormbow and obsidian armor into oblivion Obstinately will not run on less than 2.5gb of ram Eats a ton of VRAM for the graphics quality (~800 MB @ 1080P max for 16 bit textures and really low color) Does not scale up performance wise with better hardware (r7 2700 + RX 590 and running it off an ssd still gives me 30fps lag spikes and hurky jerkiness) Linux port post 1.4 runs like a nightmare compared to 1.3.5.3 Linux port Fishing is mandatory for a pleasant playthrough but itself is horrendously boring and rng based RNG in this game is awful Game is hard to reccomend to people who dont know someone who will play with them and show them the way, it's really hard to get into because the game does NOTHING to explain itself. Linux installation scripts for updates are ALWAYS days late and often times the shortcuts dont work requiring you to execute the binary from the terminal

It's very similar to Minecraft; that's not bad itself, but Minecraft is poop too .. It has more content than Minecraft ( more useless items ), but there's far less to discover. It quickly becomes boring.
