This is the best Terminator game made to this day. And probably the best Terminator content released since 1991.
The game doesn't try to reinvent the wheel. But mostly everything it does, it does it well. At it's core it's a regular FPS, some elements of open world (small/medium maps but you are free to roam around). It has multiple endings, romances, sidequests, iconic weapons from the movies, etc...
The best thing is the adition of the Infiltrator free update. A mode where you play a Terminator infiltrator (like arnie in the movies) on a big map and you gather informations to track down a commander of techcom. You can't save, but it's random. I wish they made a whole game around this.
That game is the worthy successor of Skynet and Future Shock.
Is it perfect? Not at all. The AI is a bit dumb (still dangerous, though), the map levels are often linear (though not always), and you'll feel like you're throwing spit wads at the Terminator units for half the campaign (though really, I would argue that this helps to preserve the 'unstoppable killing machines' trope of the first film).
But now, we're on to the good aspects of the game:
The devs absolutely 'nailed' the 80's VHS post-apocalypse atmosphere depicted briefly at the beginning of Terminator 1. The bleak, grayish lighting, the well-implemented film grain effect, and the absolutely 'perfect' soundtrack make for what is, unqeustionably, the most faithful depiction of the dark world of Terminator to date.
The difficulty is highly customizable, even in-game. Anything from HUD disabling/limiting to enemy and character health display disabling and navigation marker removal is free for the player to tweak at their whim. This is a welcome change from the AAA insistence on wresting any and all control from the player's hands, and I hope to see it more often from middle-market and indie developers.
The storyline completely ignores everything that happens after T2, and as one of the remaining Terminator fans, I couldn't be happier. This alone was reason enough for me to have bought this game on Steam (wish I had known about GOG sooner, but I digress), but the fan-service (which is actually good and fitting here, and not lame) made the experience even better. If you're a fan of the series, the plot twists probably won't come as much of a surprise to you, but are still a nice wink and nod to classic Terminator.
All in all, I would rate this game as a solid 8.5.10
After enduring an onslaught of increasingly bad works of fan-fiction that dared to call themselves 'Terminator films', I can finally say that 'Jugdement Day' has the sequel it deseerves.
Buy it or face termination!
A Terminator game that happens right before the events of Terminator 2 - Judgement Day. It's an average shooter with light RPG elements. What makes it stand out is the Terminator 2 licence and Teyon uses it well.
Elements to consider:
- Overall atmosphere is great
- FPS mechanics are average at best
- Story is all right, not bad but not spectacular either
If you are a Terminator fan then it's a must buy. If not, then it's propably not for you.
I hesitated to play this game coz of all bad reviews but eventually I decided to give it a try. And ohh man… that was amazing experience. Initial chapters when you are scavenging is boring as hell but after you find a resistance it’s a game changer – literary. Finally the franchise shine and everything is great (almost). I enjoyed it till the end but Annihilation Line DLC moved the experienced to the next level. I wish all game was like that. The only real drawback I had was limited variety of enemies and AI. For instance player should be able to shoot off the guns from terminators (not only flamethrowers) and they should chase him and try to grab him down (like flamethrowers terminators do – but they just stand still). IMHO not polished diamond.
Story is really good. Much better than in movies released after Terminator 2. Gameplay borrows some ideas from Deus Ex (experience points, inventory, skills).
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
