Frustrating, but also rewarding, it's so awesome when you finally get the hang of things and make progress. Anyone who complains about scam tactics or the game being too expensive is crazy, since this is the cheapest of all top roguelikes even if they are on a special sale and TOME isn't, and it offers an insane amount of content..
This is one of the best roguelikes you can buy, if not the best roguelike period. That said, I heavily advise that you instead get this on its own website. Galaxy seems to have a funny way of dealing with ToME's DLC, which can also make putting addons in the proper folder a tiny bit confusing at first glance. It's donationware over there, you don't need to mess with the redeemable codes, and you tend to get updates faster (there is actually an updater packaged with the game, it's the app T-Launcher or a similar name).
But if you'd rather just have it on Galaxy or would like to buy it on sale and put the redeem codes in te4.org, I highly recommend it. Not only will you find a game that will give you years of entertainment, but also plenty of ways to play it. Updates improve and evolve the game over time and there are tons of addons that will do the same (side note: don't worry about Steam Workshop here, there are far more addons at the game's main website). Not just one but two more DLCs are coming, heck this is even one of the few titles where the DLC gets updated.
I bought this game very early on GOG, can't remember, but I think as soon as it appeared, as I like roguelikes, played NetHack a long time ago, old ADOM, POWDER on my Nintendo DS (by ZincLand)... but for some reason I never got into it until recently (work, family and being obsessed with Path of Exile didn't leave much time for other games).
However, now that I started playing it and really learning it - I can say it's one of the best games ever made!
The style, pace of gameplay, being a real roguelike... it all adds to the overall atmosphere which I simply love! The sheer abundance of Race/Class combinations for one to challenge themselves with is outstanding. Balance is not there, but then again, it's never there in a roguelike, is it? For a game that's actually free, I cannot praise DarkGod and other devs enough.
I honestly have to say that my only complaint is probably the fact that it's not built on a faster native framework like SDL/SFML or something. The game is pretty sluggish on older PCs/my MacBook Air, but runs really good on my main gaming rig. I just wanted to add this here:
If there were a Kickstarter to get money to re-do some of the engine parts to make the game run faster, and for maybe some art/more music/effects... I seriously can say I'd easily give 200$ for it, that is how much I love the game, and it's worth it if not more, with over 200 hours combined on standalone, GOG and Steam version. You also should know that 200 hours in this game is NOTHING. Some players have thousands of hours and they're not even finished with their achievements and personal goals, and the game's replayability is insanely high, not just because it's a good roguelike, but because it's THE BEST roguelike currently!
Oh, and did I mention that the game is open-source, so you can go and add stuff to it, make a new campaign? Just WOW.
Bought at full price here and Steam, and would do it even if prices were higher.
I reviewed this game on Steam. Didn't say much about the gameplay, because it's great, complex and diverse and there wasn't a lot I could think to say beyond just saying how great it is, over and over So instead I focused on what I found interesting about the story. No spoilers.
See, TOME has a great worldbuilding twist and then layering more twists on top of that. It's basic fantasy with numerous kinds of twists I've never seen before. The writes do an amazing job subverting expectations while keeping a solid core intact.
So I posted a review, mostly critical because I figured straight praise was just less interesting. I got a dev response. We then had a nice exchange, that still stands as one of the most positive interactions I've ever had with a developer. He's still in my friendlist, all around great guy,
In summary, if you like roguelikes and complexity, TOME is a thing you want. Even if roguelikes or complexity aren't usually your thing, for this price, TOME might be worth checking out at least once. Like Binding Of Isaac, Terraria or Darkest Dungeon, this game stands in my hall of fame of best game deals of all time.
If you like the most traditional of the Roguelike genre, TOME is top class! There's no messing around with interpretation here, no "Roguelite elements," it's just a straight up grid-based Roguelike that lets you think each and every turn before you make an action. I love it!
A lot of people who get paid to write about video games complain that games are too just tooooo hard these days because they require twitch reflexes, stress management, blah, blah. This is a counterpoint. The game is hard, but it accommodates literally anybody patient enough and thoughtful enough. The game rewards exploration and system mastery with a bevy of absolutely wonderful unlockables. Seriously, there are so many unlockables. You can monkey around with difficulty, though I don't recommend it. A Wiki is available, as well as in game chat, but I recommend you avoid those until you're more familiar with the game. Everything has a solution. If it's possible, it's probably been done. However, you WILL be blindsided by deaths that will make you go, "...What just happened?" Take these as genre appropriate learning experiences. However, you can even turn off Permadeath, if you so desire. As a wise man once said, "If you can't slam with the best, then jam with the rest."
You want the DLC's. They add a metric ton of content to the game. I got the whole deal for a little less than $14 USD when it was on sale. That's quite the bargain for the sheer amount of hours you can sink into this beast. The dev is also super cool, and has put his heart and soul into this game. TOME is a 5/5 top class Roguelike experience, and is one of the genre's best.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
