You're a renowned hacker, the most notorious cyberspace thief in the corporate world. Caught during a risky break-in, you become indentured to Diego, a greedy Trioptium exec who bankrolls a rare cyberjack implant operation. After six months in a healing coma, you awaken to the twisted aftermath of a terrible disaster. Where are the surgeons? Why is the station in such disrepair? Slowly, the chilling realization that something is very wrong creeps over you.
Once a prime corporate research facility, Citadel now teems with mindless cyborgs, robots and terribly mutated beings, all programmed to serve SHODAN, a ruthless A.I. There's scarcely time to think before it unleashes the first terror...
Exactly twenty one years after its first release, System Shock is back!
The Enhanced Edition adds a modern touch to this true classic gem, without taking anything from its unmistakable atmosphere.
See for yourself that the game that has been called the benchmark for intelligent first-person gaming, has lost nothing of its ability to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Running Manjaro 5.17.15-1, wine 8.8-1.
Installed from offline installer no problem. Haven't tested all features yet, but make sure you don't have any midi interfaces or loopbacks, it will try to talk to them, and the setting cannot be disabled from the menus.
This review is based on a ss portable that I played a few years ago. I first tried playing the original CD version of the game, but, after eventually getting the DOS config correct, gave up due to the horribly awkward controls. SSP solved these issues, making the game playable by introducing mouselook, and a number of other improvements. IMO, the enhancement isn't an enhancement, but a gameplay necessity. The fact that it's viable to play this game today is solely due to the efforts of those who created the enhancement mods.
I excluded technology when rating ss1; obviously the graphics , audio & AI aren't comparable to today's standards. I played it as a precursor to ss2, because it's a piece of gaming history, and due to it's sterling reputation. And I enjoyed it! The learning curve is due to the elaborate hud and gameplay, rather than the old technology. SS1, a hybrid fps/role-playing experience, is immersive, possessing an impressive complexity and storyline, not to mention innovative concepts such as cyberspace. Citadel is a fully architecturally-realised space station. Impressively for 1994, you can return to previous levels of the station, making the experience seamless and coherent. The mysteries and horrors of Citadel will slowly unfold as you explore its desolate but not uninhabited interior.
Accept ss1 for what it is, and plug yourself into an iconic piece of gaming history.
System Shock is a sort of a dungeon crawler FPS set in a cyberpunk fantasy, where you get all sorts of energy weapons, conventional ones aswell, cybernetic enhancements and consumables which glitch your PoV if used too much. it has a good story with well voiced characters, an intimidating and crazy AI antagonist and well thought out level design.
Visually, it looks good for it's time. It's got all of that "cyberpunk style" with walls filled with electronic panels and wired, but also has some more fancy places with carpets and chandeliers. Each floor is different in both level design and visual aspect. Pretty much every level has doors which are locked behind "security measures" which you need to get rid of by destroying cameras and power/CPU core.
However, the unintuitive UI, lack of item and cybernetic descriptions makes it very confusing and weird. The lack of direction in some parts of the game are also a bit problematic, as I got a "Where the hell do I go?" situation a couple of times because of lack of details in mission update logs and emails. But most of time, it's all laid out for you.
I want to make it clear that the System Shock franchise is amazing. Both games were pioneers of their time and System Shock 3 falling into development hell before the rights were aquired and the project killed by a chinese conglomerate was extremely disappointing. Equally disappointing is nightdive'$ treatment of the "enhanced edition". Clearly put out as a quick cash grab to hype/promote their remake 2 years later at a significantly higher price.
"Enhanced edition" was released in 2021. As of this review it's still currently on patch version 1.2.16. This is significant because this patch introduced horrific micro stutter that's so irritating it makes the game a chore to play, completely ruining the experience. They have also failed to fix the reactor code randomization problem that has been present since day one. Also still unaddressed.
To add insult to injury, nightdive'$ support act ignorant to the problem. I have emailed them regarding this asking when it will be fixed. They play dumb pretending not to know about it. When I replied with multiple links to other players reporting the same issue, they simply closed the support ticket, choosing to do nothing.
I know many see nightdive as a savior of classic games but this clearly isn't the case. CEO stephen kick talks a big game about old titles and not wanting to do wrong by them but his companies actions speak louder than his panderings. Blade Runner was released in a joke state. Blood "fresh supply" is still a broken mess and they have abandoned System Shock "enhanced edition" in a steaming pile of garbage over 4 years ago. Clearly maintaining games after the initial spike in new release sales is not profitable when you can instead move on to the next shiny toy to rinse/repeat the process all over again. Sadly, this is a patterned history.

4+ years and counting... Pathetic.
OK, I completed System Shock 2 twice. I enjoyed each time immensely, not because I was a huge fan of Looking Glass games, which I was, but because it was a great game. I rushed out and purchased System Shock in order to play the game that led to this amazing game that was System Shock 2.
It wouldn't work. No matter what I did, it wouldn't work. Oh, I could watch the video fine, just couldn't play the game.
Now, I can finally play this game. Thank you, GOG.
btw...I still own the cd version, box and all, of this game...always held out hope of getting it to run. So far, I have been enjoying this a lot, if perhaps far to late in the game.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
