Synergia is a yuri thriller visual novel that takes place in a cyberpunk future, wrapped up in a beautifully unique, vibrant neon aesthetic. At the end of the world, sometimes love is the ultimate crime.
Story
Cila, a veteran cop with a sour outlook and anger issues expects nothing more from life besides the smell of ozone, blinding neon lights and the ever-present manhole steam. At least, until a shady friend replaces her broken-down housedroid as a favor. Advanced, more efficient and remarkably perceptive, unit M.A.R.A. begins to penetrate Cila's toughened exterior and possibly even heal her new owner's old wounds – if Cila can decipher the recurring nightmare the process brings. Soon Cila and Mara forge a unique - if sometimes uneasy - bond. Unbeknownst to Cila, just as her life begins to find its new normal, the technological giant Velta Labs gets wind of Mara's existence and takes a mysterious interest in the android. A war unlike any before it is brewing on the horizon, its players are silently being selected and one android's fate may spell the difference between peace, war, the blossoming of a new religion, or a technological singularity beyond comprehension.

Hoped for something like "Cinders meets Android: Identity Trilogy", found cliche-rich anime fiction story with very weak and faulty use of science. Still, as an anime veteran and AI-theme lover I appreciate the effort. 3,5/5
If you look for yet another visual novel about romancing kids with huge eyes, then look elsewhere.
If you came for great gameplay and puzzles, then there are none in this "game". This is literally a book with a few sketchy background images.
If you search for a very good cyberpunk story, then you just found a masterpiece.
You will have to play this twice. The weird thing is that most of the story and background stay the same, yet your experience will be totally different the first and the second playthrough. It is hard to describe without spoiling the plot.
There are two endings in this game. I believe you will get the first one no matter the decisions you have made. I didn't get the second ending in my second playthrough despite "playing" very differently. I had to search the internet for "correct" decisions. This is frustrating enough to give the game 3 stars. However, the ending and epilogue are very rewarding and the game is so different from a typical VN, I can't give it a score lower than it deserves.
Pro's:
- Very good cyberpunk story. Very good balance between the main plot and emotional colors.
- Long story, will keep you reading for 7-10 hours.
- Believable characters and their motivation. Believable setting.
Con's:
- Not a game. You will make 3 decisions during the entire game. This is literally a book.
- Forces you to play twice. But I think this bold decision allows you to enjoy the epilogue more because you can't rush to it.
Kicks with a strong start, we don't know much about the characters lives or the world they live in but their personalities and relationships, as well as the story's tone are very well established. Unfortunately, Synergia trends downward from there. The underwhelming middle third or so repeatedly revisits some story beats, then shuffles most of the main characters' interpersonal development into a montage, while the games endings are quite poor. The character relationship central to the game's premise is undercut with a poor twist (acknowledged in-game in a single line, then ignored), then neglected in favor of dumping setting info and reveals of events that already occurred out of sight. Cyberpunk narratives often involve convoluted conspiracy plots that aren't fully revealed until their conclusion, but in this case the story is excessively backloaded and at odds with its romance element.
Graphics and music are fine; stylish, appropriate and adequate for the story being told but nothing outstanding. Choices/branches are limited, you're also presented with a few in-game computer screens to interact with for info dumps, but most options on them can't be selected. Two endings, and a curiously named 'Epilogue' unlocked after seeing both that takes place before anything else in the game.
Just as I began to love the story: the stop!, if you want to see the end, you have to start again the game.
I was about to give 4 stars, but his stopping feels rather 2 stars, so I give the middle
Synergia has some of the best overall presentation and atmosphere of any visual novel I have played. Everything from the opening video; to the menus; to the music; to the art are all top notch. It all ties together to just ooze cyberpunk out of every crevice. The story itself isn’t bad but it gets really rushed near the end and the ending just feels abrupt. The romantic relationship between Mara and Cila also feels a little forced and rushed. They go from cold and awkward to saying how they love each other within a matter of days with nothing in between. There is also a ton of story dumped on the reader in the last half hour or so which makes keeping track of new developments and characters an issue only for the game to abruptly end anyway. The endings were another issue of mine. The store page lists “multiple endings” but in truth there are only two. Now two is more than one so they’re not lying exactly but when I see “multiple endings” I expect several different ones. Even worse is that to access the epilogue you need to have completed both endings. My real issue with that is that there is a single epilogue, which means that regardless of which ending you get the epilogue doesn’t change at all. Overall the game just lacks choices and branching. It’s not a kinetic novel but it also isn’t really choice driven. It’s stuck in an uncomfortable no man’s land. I really wished that the game had developed the character “Rat” more as well as had more of Darla.
