A lot has been said about this game in the other reviews, but it really is a great game. A basic description would be castle building, defense, and attack. The main campaign is a series of missions to consolodate control of the country by besting four other lords. You start out with small defensive oriented missions and grow to full-out castle assaults. Not only must you actively defend your castle, but you must build up your economy and keep you people happy.
The very first thing you notice is the attention to detail. Every building has a nifty little animation that goes along with it. The game is 2d, but that allows for a TON of fancy little animations. The trees all sway in the breezes, the rivers flow peacefully by and dairy cows amble about. More importantly, the archers make great little pincushions out of their targets and pit traps are suitably messy. Stronghold provides one of gaming's greatest thrills when a properly placed pitch trap is ignited by fire-arrow just as enemy troops arrive. FWOOSHH!!
Once you are done with the main campaign, there is a secondary economic campaign. This one is primarily to test your management skills, but does offer a challenge. In addition there is a wonderful editor for creating your own levels. Back in the day there was a thriving community making new castles to assault and defend, most based on real world fortresses. You can probably still find these if you know where to look.
I loved this game and heartily recommend it to anyone interested in castles and life in the middle ages.
Stronghold is a nice strategy game which unfortunately suffers from some flaws that prevent it from being enjoyable for a very long time. The economy aspect is nice and balanced, however, the combat system is not, and you'll find yourself often cursing at the fact that a bunch of simple spearmen and other footfolk can tear down a stone wall of your beautiful and tideously created castle in a matter of ten seconds.
This and the fact that the voice replies of the in-game units become quickly annoying, somewhat stains the whole experience of, what would have been otherwise a very fun and satisfying gaming experience.
That said, te cutscenes of the single-player campaign, as well as the story itself are quite entertaining, and the difficulty curve is such, that you rarely find yourself being frustrated.
All in all recommended, considering the price.
Stronghold is a good medieval city and siege simulator. Since it has come out, it has been well-reviewed as a game, but I'd like to evaluate it in a very specific technical sense: how well it suits play on a low-level netbook.
Stronghold is a decent enough RTS with good character, low system requirements, and doesn't require too much micromanagement, though it won't change your life or addict you for hours on end (which can be seen as a good thing). It's six bucks American, and yours forever. I've also found that it's a good game to take on the go, especially if you're an owner of the diminutive Asus EEE 701 series.
My setup (which may differ from yours):
- Asus EEE 701 2G Surf with Windows XP
- A built-in resolution of 800x480, with a virtual (ie. scrolling) resolution of 800x600
- Re-released CD version of Stronghold, fully patched (the GOG.com install package may not work portably as the CD version does, but it is very likely that it will.)
- Install size: 721MB playable, 531MB when 7zipped
On netbooks: The EEE 701 series is pretty much the first and the least of the current netbook craze, that is, it came out roughly first and cheapest among the mass-produced ultra-portables (most UMPCs at the time were at least a thou each), and also has the smallest disk drive (a puny 2GB), the smallest screen resolution, the worst battery life, and the slowest processor. Most damning, the Intel GPU is unspeakably weak. In other words, if a game is going to work great on this netbook, it'll probably run phenomenally on newer netbooks.
Stronghold overcomes or works with the limitations of the EEE 701 series as follows:
- Low CPU and GPU requirements means it's actually playable on the EEE, or any other low-spec machine. This may also indicate that it plays well with Linux virtualization software WINE.
- Zero DRM on both the CD and GOG versions means no Steam-like activation or anti-consumer measures to overcome, and no internet connection required to play the single player version of the game.
- Automatic resolution switching: Rather than crash on startup or refuse to run, Stronghold actually switches to the virtual 800x600 resolution native to the EEE's Intel graphics driver. It just works! (Trust me, this is rare.)
- It's (mostly) portable. One of the concerns of the EEE platform and netbooks in general is the slightly fragile nature of the built-in disk drive. Designed to be tiny, quiet, and with low power usage, these drives have a limited life span compared with other hard drives, are difficult if not impossible to replace, and are limited in disk space (2 GB on the base 701). It's important to be able to install a game to a separate USB drive if necessary, and have it run from there, as well as only minimally write to the disk drive. The CD version of Stronghold does this fairly well: install it on external PC, copy to USB flash drive or SD card, and run anywhere. No wastage of on-board disk space. I haven't tested the GOG version, but if it's little more than an install wrapper, you should be able to replicate this functionality.
- It still sounds and looks great, even on tiny speakers and a tiny monitor. The voice acting, game event sounds, and music are all sharp and clear. The graphics are clearly sprite-based, but exist in a meaningful 3-D environment in which height has advantages. Using sprites allows the game to perform well on minimal hardware, and so trees sway in the breeze, chickens cluck and move about, and military units are relatively easy to discern.
- The game exits quickly with an ALT-F4, and ALT-TABs to and fro with no difficulty.
- If you enjoy the game enough, Stronghold is also quite replayable. Other than the base campaign, there are a number of fan-made maps available on the web, such as the Lord of the Rings map pack.
Naturally, there are a few downsides to playing any game on a netbook:
- The tiny screen and 800x480 resolution mean a lot of squinting, and some irritating virtual scrolling up and down.
- You'll need an external mouse to get any serious gaming done, due to the typical RTS need for quick scrolling and precision clicking. You can, however, crank down the game speed to a crawl if you need to. A turn-based game might be better suited to the form factor.
- Stronghold, or any game, will gobble up battery power as it exercises your CPU, and to see anything, you'll need to crank up your brightness. Find a power outlet if you can.
All told, Stronghold is a fun enough game and performs well enough to be taken along for any coffeeshop journey you may take your netbook on.
This game actually emphasises strategy. Unlike other RTS's which whoever clicks the fastest or spawns a rush with low-level units in the first 2 minutes of the game wins, Stronghold instead requires planning.
You need to determine how big to build your castle and whether to place building inside or outside the walls. Too small a castle and a long siege will leave you starving and destroy your industries. Too large a castle and your opponent won't need to breech any walls because you never complete them.
If defending a castle sounds too easy, don't worry because then you will need to lay siege to your enemies castle as well.
Your success usually depends on keeping your peasants well fed and happy. If you run out of food or force them to pay to much in taxes and they will become unhappy and leave. Once the start leaving, they stop working in your industries creating a cascade effect. It is very difficult to recover from this type economic nightmare.
Also, the game does add some humorous elements as well. If you play a long time or late into the night the game will suggest that you take a break or go get a snack.
If you have never played stronghold do yourself a favor and buy both it and its sequel (Stronghold Crusader) now. The only problem you will have is the lack of sleep why you try to finish one more level.
What's not to love about a game where you get to build a huge castle with hulking walls, crossbow archers, and rock-throwing towers in preparation for a full-scale invasion where the enemy will try to fill in your moats and ram down your gates as you dump boiling oil on them and shoot crossbows through their armour. Truly this game will forever be a classic castle-building strategy that every RTS gamer should not overlook.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
