Fun, albeit short romp

Strike Suit Zero is action packed and sports some pretty decent graphics and when the player gets the hang of the Strike Suit he/she really feels like an anime badass. Accelerate towards a group of enemies, transform and unleash a cloud of missiles then switch back to the fighter and hit your EMP to throw off an incoming missile. Or close with an enemy cruiser, blasting away, then transform and strafe its length taking out turrets and weak points. At its height the gamplay is rewarding but the game isn't without its flaws. The game is quite short, only 13 missions long and 5 simulator missions. While the missions are multi-part, some of them are quite under-whelming and when you compare the number to the older games like Freespace or Tie Fighter it falls short by a long way (only half or two thirds). The game also lacks variety, while it does introduce a lot of new fightercraft as you play, story-wise the player is only ever expected to fly three different fighter types. While the fighters are attractive, I never got a sense for the differences between enemy fighters beyond how much damage they would take. The simulator missions tend to be one-note affairs and rather gimmicky. While there is an interesting underlying narrative, I would rather the missions highlighted more interesting battles from the larger conflict. The missions also go out of their way to tell you what the player should fly historically, but when you get to the fighter select screen that loadout and fighter is not default. You have to create it yourself. One pet peeve I have is that the HUD is atrocious. I don't think it would have been that hard to create a HUD which looks like a little more fighter-like. As it stands, it's literally a drop down menu. Overall the game is fun and worth a bash but I would like to see a more expanded game with a deeper narrative. Personally I never felt that connected to the ships or the other elements in the game, I would like a campaign that builds

Lots of explosions, no soul.

As a long-time mech-anime fan I kept an eye on this game for a while. When I finally bought a computer able to play it though I found that the game did not really live up to its promises. The Good: There were certainly moments where I had a great time with this game. Some of the fights were intense and engaging, with missiles flying everywhere and enemy ships constantly warping in with wave after wave. The ship designs and general aesthetics were a bit cookie-cutter but they did the job. And the soundtrack started off strong (though it became repetitive and even non-existent two missions in). The Bad: There were a few technical problems, but I hate to spend time explaining them because it could just as easily have been my fault (maybe I missed a patch update or some driver was out-of-date). Nothing came up that broke the game completely, but I had some trouble with menu settings not sticking and there were a few error messages. The real problem of the game though went deeper than any of these technical issues, but it is also harder to explain. Basically I felt like this game lacked any soul. It had no aesthetic of its own. They relied on the fun you would have flying a transforming spacecraft, but I played games with transforming spacecraft 10+ years ago (the Robotech series). They thought adding some colors and debris fields to the space battles would make them more appealing, but there have been colorful space games with debris fields before too. Games that come from smaller developers need to have a stronger sense of their own purpose and their own aesthetic if they want to compete, rather than simply trying to match a type of game that has been done before. This game fails to make this leap. It fails to set itself apart in any solid way. The Verdict: For fans of mech-animes, or people generally interested in unrealistic but (sometimes) frantic outer space dogfights, you will probably find something to enjoy in this game. But most of what makes this game good is only skin-deep. I recommend waiting for a sale if you are on the fence (I got my copy for $3 during the GOG Fall Sale).

Nice space shooter, if it works.

I've played the original version of SSZ and upgrade my copy to the Director's Cut. SSZ is a good space shooter, with beautiful backdrops and immersive music. I was therefore looking forward to playing the Director's Cut, unfortunately it is plagued by a variety of issues which haven't allowed me to play the game as I would like. First off I can't seem to use my controller, I have a Razer Sabretooth X-Box controller which is recognised by the game. Switching to it as default control method makes it do nothing at all, none of the buttons work, I can't navigate menu's or fly the ship. The game is in controller mode though as it shows the "A for continue, B for back" context hints on screen. Secondly the game seems to constantly want to start in a botched windowed mode, it's set to full screen in the options but the window border is visible when I start the game. Switching to windowed and back to full screen in the options menu fixes the issue for the current session. It would've been nice if the developers had spent a bit more time working on the bugs and issues before releasing the Director's Cut.

Influenced by Battlestar Galactica

I didn't realize this game had any BSG influence when I bought it, but was pleasantly surprised -- it has lots of signature BSG elements, like the dramatic ethnic wailing that dominates the soundtrack, a fighter pilot instructor/wing woman who behaves and sounds a LOT like Katee Sackhoff's Starbuck, and a "You are the last hope for humanity" storyline that borrows some of BSG's theatrics. The fighter-jet-in-space element works hand-in-hand with the space mech mechanics -- you will have to master both formats because the former leads to the latter, and you can only make the transformation to the ultra-powerful space mech after feeding on the energy of your destroyed enemies. That said, the combat in both modes is satisfying, and the Strike Suit mode feels appropriately powerful, with an enormous amount of weaponry and a multi-targeting missile system that works a lot like Arkham Knight's missile barrage for the Batmobile. Overall a nice pick-up, especially if you can snag it on sale.

Definitely a 3

Having backed this on Kickstarter in the early days, I was quite disappointed with the game they released. It's a reasonably pretty space shooter that is quite difficult to get into. Not really a strategic or even tactical game. Not worth more than a knock down sale price unlike the kickstarter. It also gets quite boring quite quickly. So a 3 star game, really for the space mecha anime fans.
