Street Fighter 2 is the most important Fighting Game of all History in my opinion, it's here where the Most Fun and Charismatic Characters started their careers on the Fighting Games Industry, The selection here counts with some Known and Unkown Characters such as Ryu, Chun-Li, Bison, Sodom, Birdie, Sagat, etc.... For this reason, if you find yourself thinking "Who is Sodom ?" is totally normal, they are charactersa from the Manga of the same name as this game, and are present there if are interested to known the Background of this game and why some very popular Characters are not here, but this is still a very fast and fun game to play with your Son/Daughter, Husband/Wife and Friends in General, the commands are precissely executed, and is very good to pass the time of that Bad day at Work or in Life in General.
If you for whatever reason are reading this, welcome to the simple mistake you made today. Wether you bought this for $2 or $5.99, you most likely can't even start the game. If you look up anything on how to fix this game, you'll be going thru forums that are least 10 years old having the same problems you do at this very moment while reading this review.
First off all, I think it's pretty cool that the community is able to buy a standalone version of this game. Being released in 1997 and purchasable 28 years later is nice. You can't say that much about other street fighter games. With that said...
The PC version of Alpha 2 is garbage. There are mixed resutls on who can even run this game on what Operating System. This game can run on Windows 11 and it can run on SteamOS, so versions of Linux might be able to run it. Windows 10 seems to run it even though people claim it can't, your milage will vary.
Sadly, that's the least of your problems. As someone who is deep in the FGC, this the least than ideal version to play if you truly love to play this game. The PC version is based off the console versions of that era, Playstation 1 and Sega Saturn. Sprites and backgrounds seemed to be carried over from those for this native PC port. When the game starts you are greeted with low res text and intro background. Pretty normal since this is an old game.
Visual issues aside, that isn't the first problem. You will notice that you can have no keyboard control. Almost none of the keys work. The only keys that work are esc, f4, f9. Esc showing you how to close the game which is f9 and f4 forcing the game to window mode. Why? Don't know. If you want to use your keyboard you have to go thru the games System Files and click Run as administrator. Only then can you use your keyboard. Warning though, it is not the basic WASD layout no no no. Once you enter the main menu, you can't chose anything using the mouse, which isn't a problem, but WASD and arrow keys do not work. YGHB acts as movement keys; and Z is confirm. It makes no sense. This little bit of knowledge will help you change the keybindings.
Deciding to use a controller doesn't help either. The two controllers I can confrim that work with this game are Xbox and PS4 controllers. There are mixed reports as to which do and don't but these did work. The only reason I can think people in forums and threads can't agree on which controllers work is because the DPad and face buttons don't work. The only thing that works on a pad is the left joystick which isn't much help at all. You will still need to use the keyboard to reach the options menu to change the button layout for your controller. After you've finished, you still need to use the keyboard to hit confirm. And after all of that, you still cannot use your Dpad. That's right, this game has no option or config to change movement keys to the Dpad. YOU ARE STUCK using the joystick for a fighting game which is unheard of. ONLY A FEW people like to use the joystick for fighting games. Especially 2D ones.
Finishing up headaches, you decide to play acrade mode. Pick a character, the match starts and notice the graphics and fps are unsavory. Black bars fill the ends of your screen. That's fine, being an old game you easliy max out the setting. There is only one setting for graphics. Max it out to 4 (yes that is max settings), start arcade mode again and it still seems off.
SFA2 for PC is visually okay and loads fast but it has unique issues when compared to the PS1 or Saturn ports. You can look up a comparsion video of this game vs the console version to learn that the backgrounds on PC are missing visuals and affects that the console ports have. Not to mention the speed is off. Almost all fighting games target or lock in 60fps. The console versions do a good job of this.
On PC, I was getting a fps reading of 75fps with the strangest one time max fps being 90fps? This game ends up feeling to fast at times and uneven since fps doesn't stay stable sometimes. What's stranger though is that sometimes, the characters don't even feel like they're moving at that speed. My only assumption is the fps counter might be reading the background envoriments at random. And this is all assuming the you're playing at the games "Normal" speed since SFA2 has the option of running in game matches with Capcom's staple "Turbo" speeds. I messed around with this. At least to me, Turbo 1 seems to be stable enough to seem like a normal, proper fighting game.
OH and don't close the game until you've backed it up? Yes, the backup option from what I have learned is what saves all of your settings. Not sure who thought this term was equal to "save settings."
The experience with SFA2 on PC is abysmal. There are ways to negate some issues. Like widescreen and visual clarity by using DG VooDoo. Dpad and controller, not keyboard, being aided with joy2key or something similar. On SteamOS/Steam Deck, my experience was better. You can run it thru Heroic Launcher under Wine by changing it in the settings and using Steam's controller interface to bind buttons to a virtual keyboard. Which is surprisingly decent way to play this terrible port. You can also do the same while running your steam deck in desktop but it was easier for me to run it in game mode.
There are other ways to play SFA2. Capcom has made 2 collections of Arcade ports that both have SFA2. With better visuals and quilty of life changes. And online vs which this game does not have. Unless you love the console port of SFA2, don't buy it.
I still give this 3 Stars though because i was able to play a small bit inside virtual box Windows XP.
If you have Win 7/8 and don't know how to use Virtual Box there is no point buying this game
As many other reviews have said this is a PS2 Port Of the Arcade version that has just been brought to PC..The PS2 Ports were not the best..in fact got very low scores in raitings
This game was my first fighting game during my childhood days, but let us skip the nostalgia aside for this review
Pro
Simple combat mechanic yet fun to execute
Latest windows (Reviewed in Windows 10) is still supported (Thanks GOG for this)
Diverse set of players to choose and moveset to be utilised (for an old game)
Classic game that still looks quite good (music and graphical texture-wise) in today's standard
Cons
Lack of modern customisation (video setting, no widescreen option added) and certain issue like slowing down in rare occassion
P/S: Instal DirectPlay may resolve your crash issue. At least it is resolved for me
Conclusion
A must have for veteran fighting players if this o
