A bland FPS, a good Star Wars game.
Old crusty gamer here talking about one of only three Star Wars games that I ever finished. I bought this game on a whim when it first came out and decided to pick this up on sale to try again recently. I am going to start with the Star Wars part of this game. Republic Commando has excellent sound effects and music that definitely gives you the feeling of being in a Star Wars movie. The voice acting is pretty good and despite being a bunch of clones, your squad actually feels like a group of different soldiers. The game also does well in creating a constant sense of urgency and helps propel the paper thin plot along. Now I did have the game crash on me a few times, but outside of that Republic commando didn't have any other technical problems. So the game sounds great, what's wrong, why the low rating? Well the graphics are fine but endless grey or brown corridors you go through wears you down. While your eyes melt from the sameness of everything from environments to enemies, prepare yourself for the bullet-sponge nature of every single enemy that runs mindlessly towards you. Be thrilled yet again as your told to get to a console, press and hold the F key for 10 to 60 seconds. Issue commands to your teammates and watch as they either ignore the command or take forever to man a turret. Do you want an interesting variety of weapons? Too bad, use the default weapon for most of the game and simply swap out some attachments to snipe or deliver anti-armor rounds. So let's recap here: you have limited weapons, limited enemies, dumb friendly and enemy AI. I would only recommend this game to die-hard fans of Star Wars who don't want much out of an FPS game.
