This is pretty much the Pinnacle of experiencing being a Jedi in video games. 1997's Jedi Knight laid the ground work with what technology was available, but this game is the best. You live in the Star Wars (pre-Disney) and feel that magnificent world. you have powers, but its not OP, like in Force Unleashed. There are puzzles, and lots of story and a great mix of fighting and adventure. It also has the best Lightsaber combat you'll find.
First 3 levels are the worst you can imagine.
If you reach the 4th level, the game becomes fantastic. I never attained such liberty to control a jedi in any other franchise. It allows you to play with the powers of the force you like and the lightsaber fights, even if a bit simple, are truly pleasant.
I have to mention that i have huge bias, since i played jedi academy for a very long time in my youth. So, i am very attached to the core of its gameplay.
The story is OK. Fairly coherent and you encounter some famous characters of the franchise.
I loved Jedi Academy back when it came out, but I had never played Jedi Outcast until now. I got Jedi Outcast because everyone says it is the better title, with the same mechanics but a better story and gameplay. I don't understand how anyone can feel that way.
The combat system is incredibly dated and feels about as tactical as the original DOOM. The gunplay you are forced to endure is awful, with inaccurate weapons, no cover system, and enemy AI that just runs around from side to side to dodge your already inaccurate shots. Skill and tactics are irrelevant; the combat situations you are put into are inherently unfair, so the key to survival is just to manage your health power ups and keep your shields and ammo topped up whenever possible.
Worse than the combat is the level design. The missions take place on a succession of bases, which consist of endless mazes of corridors that meet in near-identical rooms. Progress requires you to solve puzzles, some of which make sense and some of which are utterly illogical. There are no hints, and the game's design language isn't consistent, so there is no indication of what you need to shoot, what you can open, what consoles you can activate to get to the next piece of the level. It's just a clickfest of trial and error until you manage to stumble upon the solution, usually after you've fallen to your death or been burned alive numerous times in the attempt.
All in all, this never feels like a Jedi simulation. It's just 1990s FPS mechanics dressed up in a Star Wars skin. If your idea of fun is dying and reloading constantly until you get it right, and having to look up walkthroughs on the web to discover where to go next, this game is for you.
I will say that the game runs well, and the engine works great on modern 16:9 and even ultrawide displays with just a few config file entries. So if you're an old-school fan of the game and want to relive it on a modern system, it definitely will satisfy that. Just don't go into it sight unseen and expect a satisfying Jedi simulator; skip this and go for the far superior sequel.
Now this game was a big break in comparison to Jedi Knight I. Smooth graphics, good resolution and textures and antialiasing, also shaders. Great feeling and gameplay.
And well balanced too. You starting with just your trusty blaster and few first levels you play classic shooter. Later, in the game, as story progress, you came to experience the force powers too. You will have to earn your lightsaber in a well designed level.
Storyline will take you through many well designed levels and various different environments (cloud city of Bespin, Nar Shada, Carim reactor, Yavin swamp, ...) just a-must-to-try for any star wars loving dude.
Fights are great source of fun. Not only there are plenty of different weapons to try, often you can use an alternative attack. Also lightsaber fights are interesting and catchy. Regarding force, you have three possible levels to try, increasing automatically as you progress. Try a force grip lifting a stormtrooper sky high and push him even further above with force push! Or burn a group of enemies with force lightning. Try force speed not giving your foes to take a chance.
Needless to say, soundtrack is famous, as is standard for star wars games. Smoothly changing from calm to live action themes.
Well, seems that plenty of folks have troubles running this game on Win 10. For me, using Win 10, I had a no choice. Having no working code for Win 10, I had to manually download a Open Jedi Knight code, set it for Jedi Knight (default is for Jedi Academy) and compile it. Success. Now I have a working Jedi Knight II under Win 10. Might be useful for others. If interested, I can provide the binary. I suppose, I had to patch to higher version of the game too, before the compiled code worked compatible. I had not observed any nasty bugs during my playtime. I played with this new binary from first to the last level.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
