Have been a long time fan and player of EaW, most recently with Thrawn's Revenge mod. Was looking to get this on GoG to further my dumping of Steam, but then found out that only the Steam version has been getting the updates - namely the x64 update, and even the Petroglyph site points to the steam page as the games "official website".
This Just Will Not Do. If GoG wants to continue, it needs to secure the same updates that Steam gets.
This game is amazing, but this particular version (as well as any disk/retail version) are no longer supported by the most popular mods.
While the base game runs fine, I attempted 3 separate mods all of which I'd played before on another version. Republic at War, Thrawn's Revenge, and EAW: Remake.
Republic At War's current version is 1.2.5, but the only one available for the GOG/retail versions are 1.2.1. It may not seem like much but it's a SUBSTANTIAL difference in features and gameplay
Thrawn's Revenge wasn't even available, only it's predecessor, Imperial Civil War, and while it ran fine the mod developers warn of a save corruption bug after a short amount of time. I was not able to load a test save, it crashed to desktop.
EAW: Remake ran fine but would not load any save files, the developer noted this in the retail/GOG version. The crash to desktop happened again with this mod as well.
While I still purchased it and will not get a refund because I love the base game, be aware that the mod community no longer supports the retail/GOG/DRM-free versions
Upon further research, it seems this version may not receive any patches in the future. Look up "petroglyph eaw patch" on a search engine for more details
I love this game, I've played it since it came out. I loved the disc when I had it, I love the GoG version, but now I love the Steam version even more. It's a very close to perfect game, but the difference playing through Steam is simply compatibility. It plays online, it is modable, workshop downloads, and has a living community of players. Unfortunately, these are all things the GoG version lacks. This version is perfect for LAN parties, and still retains all the in-game features. But, beyond that, the Steam version and it's recent patches, fixes, online, and even new content has made the experience far superior.
I wholeheartedly suggest buying this incredible game. However the experience may be dampened buying through GoG. Unless your intention is to illegally give the offline installation files to your friends for a LAN party. And even then, to play with more than one person, it's much more fun in Galactic Conquest, for which I suggest the Multiplayer Conquest mod on the Steam workshop which allows multiple players per faction in Galactic Conquest mode.
Not to mention that the GoG version of the original game has a game breaking error that many many people experience which didn't allow them to even run the game, and that GoG support could not fix for anyone. I found the solution in the Steam discussions; simply rename the sweaw.exe to swfoc.exe I don't know why this works, but it does.
Game is amazing as a game, but it's run like sh*et!
It's using 2-4% of CPU, less than 1GB of RAM, and only 2-3% of GPU, but frame rate is about 10fps.
It was bad on release on my old PC, but now it's almost unplayable. No matter if it's on low or everything on high. Same frame rate :/ Waste of money.
Super disappointed to find that unlike the steam version, the GOG version did not get a patch to reenable online multiplayer. this is disheartening as other titles like Starwars battlefront 2 classic did. this is a massive oversite and until a patch is released to rectify it, my review will remain at 2 stars.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
