Grew On Me
The game started rather clumsily. I had to adjust the video resolution for the early game segments to be playable and I had to adjust the sound settings to hear the protagonist talk properly. Then, I was treated to some ok 2D action, cringeworthy dialogue from the protagonist, bleak colors and honestly, for the first 3-5 levels of the game, I wasn't sure if I'd keep playing and was ready to give the game a 3 stars rating. Then, somewhat subtly, the game got more interesting and I got more invested. As my arsenal of weapons grew more interesting, so did the variety of opponents and scripted combat events that presented themselves to me. The bosses were not the best ever, but kind of cool and there were segments where props (vehicles, mounted weapons, etc) where used to good effect. Also, the alternation between types of guns, usage of flares and defensive movement tactics to deal with overwhelming numbers of charging opponents became fun. Furthermore, the protagonist, while incredibly cliché, got less annoying as the story took over. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't deep, but the bleak atmosphere, the soundtrack and bits of interesting dialogue from other characters melded together and made it work. By the time I got to the last boss, I was invested and wanted to know what would happen. Overall, a decent game that is worth your time. You might be tempted to stop playing in the early stages, but if you stick with it (and it is not that long), you may be pleasantly surprised by the time you reach the end. I know I was.
