I hate roguelites, I love this game!
First things first: This is a game perfectly safe for kids that the whole family can enjoy. Emphasis on “enjoy”, because you most likely will. It has something for all ages: From adorable pet monsters to chess puzzles. Not too difficult for smaller kids, not too easy for adults. It offers adjustable difficulty, to match your playing style from casual to hardcore. Speaking of family: There is a local coop-multiplayer option that you should try. The story is leaning towards a "school of magic" experience, where the school is under siege, and you are the rookie student who has to rise to the challenge to put a stop to it all. While it is a rougelike game, where on each run you have to beat the same rooms in random order, the spells that you collect along the way mix things up a lot. Fifty runs in, there are still puzzles to solve, tricks I haven't seen, and new things to discover. That is, for the most part, because the game lets you go wild with its spells. For example: You get a spell that can cause a monster to become your pet and fight for you. However: It works on objects like plants, chairs, or even rocks as well. Now combine your "stationary companion" with a telekinesis spell, and your pet rock becomes a useful projectile you won't want to miss. Can't fight that nasty plant? Try levitation on it, to uproot the bugger, then float it over a ledge. Slow down time, fly, teleport, freeze, fry, … Different monsters take different tactics. Fire blobs make acid blobs explode instantly, but do nothing to other fire creatures. Some creatures cannot be hurt unless you outmaneuver them. Or levitate them. Or stun them. Or, why not use telekinesis, to pick them up during their attack and change the angle to a more suitable target? There are countless such combos, and the game just lets you go crazy with them. Objects like music players are useable. Puzzles are abundant, and trying new things never gets old. Give this game a chance, and it will grow on you soon.
