Enter the world of SOMA and face horrors buried deep beneath the ocean waves. Delve through locked terminals and secret documents to uncover the truth behind the chaos. Seek out the last remaining inhabitants and take part in the events that will ultimately shape the fate of the station. But be careful, danger lurks in every corner: corrupted humans, twisted creatures, insane robots, and even an inscrutable omnipresent A.I.
You will need to figure out how to deal with each one of them. Just remember there’s no fighting back, either you outsmart your enemies or you get ready to run.
From the creators of the cult classic Amnesia the Dark Descent.
Spine-chilling horror that raises questions about identity, consciousness and existence itself.
Mixes stealth, exploration and puzzles into a coherent narrative experience.

Not 2015, but better late then never. Played Amnesia: Rebirth, previously. This one's better, IMO. Great writing, voiceover and paceing. Few technical glitches (repeated twice). Best sci-fi horror for me so far (finally no jump scares!).
It's a narrative focused immersive sim with a heavy horror leaning. There is no combat to speak of so you'll spend most of your time exploring environments, solving interactive puzzles to progress and finding what tidbits of info about the world that you can. Picking up and playing around with all the items around the environment amused me more than it probably should and gives the game a fun sense of interactivity, as do the world elements you need to operate by moving manually depending on your control method. The excellent visuals and sound design also do a lot to help pull you into the world. There are portions that'll have you avoid enemies (if you opt into it), they're tense, though occasionally confusing segments that can nevertheless put some of the strangeness of the game's setting on display in their own way.
As entertaining as that all is on its own it all serves the plot that is, without spoiling too much, an interesting and thought-provoking exploration into certain themes, masterfully crafted to make this an experience like few others you've seen, and I can strongly recommend it to fans of sci-fi, horror or not.
It's a lot of junk horror games out there but SOMA is not one of those. It's borderline a masterpiece actually by, the now, famous Swedish horror studio Frictional Games.
So the game begins with this guy who's going for a experimental brain scan after have been through a car-crash. And then suddenly he finds himself at a research & development complex at the bottom of the Atlantic. How? Why? That's for you to figure out 🙂
What I will say however is that the game nails the horror aspect of the game but also is fairly philosophical about different subjects. What is a human? What makes us human? A lot of these neat little things the game probes the player to ponder. It's not Planescape: Torment's "What can change the nature of a man?" level of philosophical but it's good and interesting subject matter nonetheless 🙂
Fantastic horrific atmosphere that nails being trapped on the bottom of the ocean being hunted by mad machine/man hybrids. And also the music is top notch but most notably the sound design in this game is of master-class. At the this time I don't think I've heard a game with such excellent sound design. The soundtrack is by Mikko Tarmia, an excellent Finnish horror composer.
If you gonna play one horror game this year then play SOMA
I always thought that it is impossible to answer a question about your favourite book, movie, game. They're just too different, you love them for the different things, how would you compare? But after I played SOMA I realized that it is the best game ever existed. And it is very sad to know that I cannot play it for the first time again.
If you've played other Frictional Games, then you have some idea about how this game plays. However, I think this is their best work. It's a modern piece of art and science fiction. The themes explored here, such as what it means to be human or at what point we cease to be human are questions that will only be answered as humanity continues to progress. I think it becomes more relevant now as AI becomes a normal part of our day to day life. The gameplay is quite thin, but I don't think that's the point of this game. The story is what really keeps you going, and it grips you from beginning to end. The possibilities explored here are quite mind boggling. The voice actors did a fantastic job. In classic Frictional Games tradition, expect some good frights too. I can't recommend it enough for anyone interested in both horror and sci fi. The game is not too long either. Took me 12 hours to roll credits, and this is by taking my time to explore and take everything in.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
