Parameters:
10 covert missions take you through the political hot spots of 5 different continents during 26 levels of play. Your arsenal includes ultra-realistic real-world weapons. Enemies are numerous, and a good mercenary knows that wits and intelligence are just as important as guns and ammo.
I remember loving this game, but oh nostalgia how you have betrayed me.
On the list of 10 FPS games you should play before you die, this game doesn't cut it.
Get stuck on scenery 20times per mission AI that kind of bugs out, it's so ugly you can't see the mission-critical switches.
I mean, I appreciate it for what it did... advanced gore and good level design/weapons (for the time).
But the ONLY things that hold up is the shooting and sound.
Loved it then, but playing now was a chore. Play ONLY with nostalgia goggles on.
Don't get me wrong, this game is pretty repetitive and most of the enemies are hitscanners. But thankfully, it doesn't go on for too long and is not the most difficult shooter in the world. On medium difficulty, it took me just under 5 hours to finish it.
If you're having trouble launching this game, make a copy of the SoF exe, rename it and then launch the game from that exe. For some odd reason, that works for me.
It's a solid shooter. Has classic Raven goofy game design. I'd like to give it a 3.5/5, 4 is kind of high for the few issues it has and 3 is too low for the fun one can have.
Takes somewhere around 6 hours to finish.
The snipers are the worst enemy in the game. They can take half your armor without warning, especially in foggy levels.
The mouse control is pretty bad. It was too laggy to kill enemies quickly and the vertical look is slower than horizontal. Mouse acceleration needs to be turned off in a config, as far as I can tell.
The weapons are weird. No assault rifle? SMG, sniper rifle, and belt-fed MG all take 5.56? And the belt-fed only shoots half the time?! Not enough ammo for a few weapons too.
Mostly great levels from different places in the world. Some locations look extra nice, like Japan.
Enemy reactions are almost as great as MoH Frontline.
The "bad" guy was really a hero; why couldn't I join his side?
You'll need SoFplus to run the game at its best.
Played this game when I was a kid.
I really liked the realistic body damage - it made the guns feel powerful like few games do!
Just finished the campain in about 2 or 3 sittings. Lots of action, great shooting galore, satisfying weapons and a wacky cartoon/comic style evil vilain plot.
There are few games that I can come back to and say "this stood the test of time", but SoF is one of those games that could be released as a lo-fi "boomer shooter" in 2024 and you wouldn't complain.
One things of note - be sure to install the SoFplus community patch - it will give you access to widescreen HD resolutions (1080p, 1440p, 4K, 5K, etc - whatever you want) and new graphical, gameplay and audio options.
Do not forget to change the renderer to the one SoFplus adds to make full use of the patch with added AO, texture enhancement, bloom, etc - the game can really look like a decent 2024 boomer shooter if you do this. 👍
If you have mouse issues - weird skipping and uneven movement - reduce the pollrate to 125Hz, as this happens at 500-1000Hz. I think the SoFplus renderer fixes this, though - but leaving this tip in just in case (it works for other old games).
Overall - worth the money and I think most gamers would find the damage model amusing enough alone to keep them entertained throughout the game. The fact that this works so well on modern systems now is a blessing too!
I didnt play that much, but saw enough to udnerstand that I dont want to bother anymore.
As someone mentioned before, the AI on normal is very slow to attack, deals small amounts of damage and has bad aim and on the next difficulty its pretty quick to shoot, deals a lot of damage and has decent aim. Add to that that many enemies try to surprise you or catch you off guard with numbers.
Its either boring or annoying. Too stupid or too try hard. No fun middle ground.
And its a shame since the visuals are nice for a game its age, the story is simple, but action packed, there are attempts to make it more cinematic with enemy behaviours/animations/cuscenes, the guns sound and feel well, shooting with the stronger weapons will dismember enemies.
But there were some other drawbacks as well. The levels sometimes could be too linear and sometimes confusing, enemy variety wasnt that great, certain areas are bugged and you can have issues moving.
I tried getting the SoFplus patch, but it didnt work and with the options available its easier to try and play something else than try to fix whats not that good.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
