STORY

After the untimely destruction of the Garden, Eve finds herself in an unfamiliar world with her beloved Adam nowhere to be found. In her search for Adam, she encounters Smelter, an unusually over-confident, winged creature with the powerful ability to transform and fuse with others, giving them incredible powers.

Offering his apparently “invaluable” assistance, Smelter transforms and fuses with Eve. They depart on a journey to the treacherous Rumbly Lands. There, they expand Smelter’s territory, allowing them to reach further into the various domains to find out what happened to her Adam, hoping to find him in one piece and find a way back home to their peaceful lives...

Excellent Game Marred by Imperfection

Disclaimer: Played on "Action" mode (no RTS/tower defense) Smelter is an action platformer drawing heavy inspiration from the Mega Man X/Z/ZX series, especially its host of attack and movement abilities and linear levels with optional cul-de-sacs. Moveset swapping is the crux of Smelter's gameplay, and its suite of skills offers a freeform approach to combat and navigation which is, with some marked exceptions, quite engaging. The majority of mandatory challenges (but far from all) are well managed by at minimum 1/3 forms, but form switching raises the skill ceiling and allows for more optimal and expressive play. With all skills unlocked, the potential for highly technical execution in Smelter is something rarely matched. Not all skill unlocks feel dramatically significant, but those that do are immensely satisfying, and even the less dramatic offer utility. Unfortunately, the road to unlocking all of the skills can be a rocky one. Before major mobility unlocks, the player will be relying on base movement mechanics which, while superior to many of Smelter's contemporaries, could've used that vital final refinement pass so many games seem to miss. Walljumping and the interaction of other abilities with it are indeed the main culprit here. Character state changes (e.g. dashing -> wallcling) aren't always intuitive and can "eat" walljump (and other) inputs, snag walls unexpectedly or conversely not catch when expected, and so on. Further, the trials used to unlock skills can at times feel like grueling postgame/ROMhack challenges, but you'll have to do them sooner if you want a full moveset. Most bafflingly, form switching, while realtime, is not an instant (i.e. not a 1 frame) transition, cannot be "buffered" during certain moves, and is not cyclical (i.e. to go from form 3 to form 1, you'll have to hit the "previous form" button twice instead of the "next form" button once). Took me 11 hours for full campaign + trials, and I can see myself replaying.

Eve helps evil to power

Smelter is a perplexing fantasy version of Bible Eve, Adam and the forbidden fruit. I finished 100% with Wine-GE-latest (Garuda Linux) and GCN controller. Upside: Music, animations, visual design, translation, is amazing. The story is intriguing, even if quickly clear, you're helping evil to conquest the world. Smelter gears to metroidvania-like platforming. Don't avoid it because of the building. The slow down of progress can be annoying but it's easy to get into. The gameplay concept is very good, a lot of gameplay variety (mixing ideas of other games) and a large set of great action moves. Story is driven by finding allies, evil bosses and opponents in unrelated side stories in each of 3 areas. Button remappings exist but mess up controls (maybe Wine-related). Downside: It pushes you to try hard. I didn't like some controls (e.g. binary acceleration, vertical wall jump), bad for precision challenges with instant failure. You must find and beat them for skill updates. Keyboard not recommended. Having to switch between 3 different skill sets on the fly makes it harder too. Later stages can be infuriating, ridiculous. Levels are too long, unable to skip revisited parts. Some boss attacks are not obvious first. Others must be memorized before you can beat bosses. It's a periodic surge of attacks. I rather dislike the skill progression. Looks like freedom but there is a partial order between levels, constraining your skill progress. Better health is only obtained by increasing soldiers (building). Some helpful skills are only obtained after beating hard levels. I had to find all secrets and optimally build on all area to have max health, only for the final level. Sadly, actual story is uncovered only when beating the debilitating final level, quickly & confusing. Those who give up after repeated attempts, will not get the story. I recommend Smelter for everyone with some gaming exp. and if you are willing to keep trying hard challenges (see online videos).

The game keeps crashing, unplayable

The game keeps crashing, whether upon leaving the tutorial to the first level or saving my progression. This is by far the poorest state of a game I've ever played at release. Version played: 1.0.3 on Windows 10.

Updated the game and my saves corrupted

As the title says, this is a big enough issue that it should be put forth first. I was about 3/4 through the game, updated to v1.04, came back a few days later and found that my manual and auto saves said 'incorrect version'. I couldn't load them at all. If I hit 'continue' the game brought me back to about 1/3 through the game, losing several hours of progress. Very dissapointing and extremely frustrating. The game itself is fine. Graphics are your standard retro style pixel art. They're clean and colorful and the environments are well designed. The story and writing is ok, nothing special. A few 'roll your eye' jokes and mostly forgetable npcs (I honestly don't remember any of their names). The side scrolling combat is pretty good. You have a variety of abilities based on which element you shift to. My biggest gripe is that switching elements can be clunky and you can only cycle from A > B > C > B > A. You can't go from C > A or A > C directly. This is a problem because the double jump is in A so any time you want to change to A you have to pause for a few seconds and might miss the jump or take damage. The 'strategy' portion on the overworld map is pretty lackluster. You can build 4 structures and only two types of units. The units will auto attack anything in range so it really just comes down to filling the new area with soldiers and archers and assigning them the element that the area enemies are weak too. The effects the elements have are pointless when you just do more damage and kill them faster. After you've cleared the area you replace half the buildings with food and housing and repeat the process in the next area. There's no strategy involved.
