Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri™ Planetary Pack

As soon as gog's edition included the expansion, I snapped it up. SMAC took the Civ franchise (unofficially) to a new height it hasn't seen since. I would love to see a graphics refresh, but honestly the graphics hold up pretty well.

The legendary 4X developer Sid Meier made a true classic in Alpha Centuari. The Earth has been destroyed, you are the last of Humanity and you must cross the vastness of space to find a new home and restore the human race. When you arrive at the planet your spaceship explodes and the already beleaguered group gets split up. Facing an inhospitable planet full of vicious aliens the different groups quickly form colonies of their own. Gather resources, grow your towns, and research technology to an edge over enemies. Form alliances and dominate the world peacefully. The choice is yours in Alpha Centauri!

It's a shame this masterpiece never got a proper sequel with modern graphics, but I'm afraid they would be unable to match the atmosphere, characters, story and depth of Alpha Centauri. Terraforming and unit design were also groundbreaking. I'm happy to play this again.

I played the heck out of this game back in the day, it was my favorite 4X for a long time, but this version doesn't do it justice on modern systems. I'm hearing of a lot of technical glitches with newer hardware and operating systems, and personally for me (running it in Windows 10 with an Intel 7700K CPU) the lovely movies that play when you complete a secret project or a number of other things always start hitching and break after a couple seconds.

I've sunk an impossible to think about amount of hours into this game for two decades, and I still keep coming back. The only thing missing is the DLC which adds extra factions.
