Why change a successful formula

I was a little hesitant of buying this game because of all the negative feedback that I have read, but given that the game reminded me very strongly of the previous installment - "Crimes and Punishments" (which in my humble opinion is the best Sherlock Holmes game) I decided to give it a fair try. The core mechanics are all still there, you can still build character portraits, gather clues and make deductions which lead to solving a case, but unfortunately this is where the positive suff ends. Overall for a point-and-click adventure game I felt that there were too few puzzles and most of them weren't even that hard. There were some very strange sections which tried to blend elements of other genres into the mix, but I would not say that the result was good. Some of these sections included stealth, trailing a suspect, finding cover while being shot at and a segment with a very strong "Tomb Raider" vibes to it. I am not sure that these elements are needed in a point-and-click adventure game. Also very frequently the game turns in an absolute Q.T.E. fest. Graphically I liked the visuals. The world looks beautiful, although you practically explore rather small maps. There is some "free roam" around your apartment and in some other locations but with the exception of a few trivial mini games there is not much to see or do. I found the cases in "Crimes and Punishments" to be much more memorable. Here the story is a continuation of the story in "the Testament of Sherlock Holmes". For a full playtrough I think that you will need around 12-13 hours, and this version does not have achievements (neither in-game nor in GoG Galaxy) unlike the previous installment so I really do not see much replay value. Still if you are a fan of the previous game I would recommend giving it a try but don't keep your expectations high. Also I advise you to wait for a sale, because the full prize is not worth it, given the length of the game and its quality.

Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter

Unfortunately I should have looked through a few more reviews before buying and save myself the trouble. Sure, the scenery & environment are beautiful and the stories interesting, but for me it was a huge step down after Crimes & Punishments, which was excellent. What bothered me the most were the timed puzzles. If you're a fan, don't mind my review and go for it, you'll love it. But for gamers like me who absolutely hate timed puzzles, this was an absolute nightmare. Of course not all of the puzzles are timed, but already during the second case the amount of timed vs. not timed mini-games and puzzles is increased so much, that I simply gave up after finishing the second case. Won't for sure continue with the game. I prefer logical/crime games and puzzles for the possibility to sit back, relax and take some time to thing everything through before proceeding and I don't want to be chased around by the game with a ticking time clock on the screen. I don't mind one or two such timed puzzles if they make some sense, but the amount in this game is just horrible. Aside from that I wasn't really fond of the changed looks and characterization of Holmes & Watson compared to the previous games - it just didn't feel right. Also disappointed that an option of 'incorrect character portrait' was introduced without having the chance to go back and correct it right away. In a game without an option of manual saves this creates tedious repeats of multiple scenes when you have to reload from an autosave the game itself did much earlier. I'm looking forward to the next game in series, hoping the developers will go back to the quality of 'Crimes and Punishments' for the game and remove all those awful timed puzzles and bring back the original characters of Holmes and Watson.

Great game

Very polished and fun game (AAA quality). Every puzzle and mini-game is different and the story is engaging. I see other reviews compare it to other titles of the series, from which I only played Crimes and Punishments, but Devils Daughter quality is on a different level. Highly recommend.

play this first before crime and pun!

Trust me - if you play devil's daughter first before you play crime and punishment, it will seem as though the game company improved the game (from devil's daughter to crime and punishment) when they released crime and punishment... if you play the games in this suggested order, i promise you the game series will be very entertaining. why? Because the first game Crime and Punishment was excellent, the 2nd game "Devil's Daughter" is a step back. Playing it out of order fixes this issue.

Dobra gra na kilka wieczorów

Na wstępie zaznaczę że nie grałem w poprzednie części gry więc oceniam tylko tą jedną grę - do rzeczy. Największą zaletą tej gry jest możliwość rozwiązania sprawy na wiele sposobów - możemy wskazać właściwego przestępcę ale równie dobrze można wskazać osobę niewinną. System dedukcji to majstersztyk - często dotajemy gotowe rozwiązanie wkrótce po rozpoczęciu sprawy, jednak nie warto iść na łatwiznę, bo poznawanie kolejnych elementów układanki sprawia, że poprzednie wybory wcale nie wydają się właściwe. Wybory moralne - bardzo dobre, wystarczy odrobina empatii żeby decyzja o skazaniu lub uniewinnieniu czyjejś zbrodni okazała się prawdziwym utrapieniem "Sherlocka". Ciekawe zagadki logiczne, dobrze wkomponowane elementy zręcznościowe i czasówki (trzeba w zadanym czasie wybrać właściwą odpowiedź, nacisnąć wskazany przycisk itp), ciekawy system odkrywania portretu postaci - to wszystko czyni z tej gry tytuł warty poświęcenia kilku wieczorów. Czego w tej grze brakuje to kilku, chociaż dwóch epizodów więcej (to co jest niby wystarcza ale pozostaje niedosyt, gracz ma wrażenie że można było nieco przedłużyć przygodę - tylko czy to wada? Oprawa graficzna wygląda jak z konsol i to niestety w tym negatywnym znaczeniu. Osoby które są graczami od kilkunastu lat taka grafika nie będzie przeszkadzać, jednak dla młodszych graczy może się to okazać dużym problemem. W grze pojawiają się ciekawe elementy poboczne, jak chociażby wcielenie się w postacie inne niż tytułowy bohater w celu udzieleniu pomocy Sherlockowi - jestem przekonany, że to jest dużo lepszy sposób poznania np. efektów śledzenie podejrzanego osobnika niż tylko wysłuchanie suchej relacji z dialogu. Takich motywów przydałoby się więcej. Ogólnie gra świetnie nadaje się na kilka wieczorów. Brak sieciowej rozgrywki okaże się zaletą dla wszystkich którzy mają ochotę skończyć granie kiedy przyjdzie na to czas a nie kiedy grupa towarzyszy w rozgrywce online stwierdzi, że czas zakończyć grę
