very good, but not AS good

I enjoyed this game enough to want to play the other ones in the series. Pirate's Curse has quickly become one of my favorite platformers ever. I prefer it over Half-Genie Hero for about a hundred different reasons that aren't worth listing here. I will mention that this game sacrifices the open level design of the previous two for something much more linear. The controls also don't feel quite as good, but I'm not sure why. In Pirate's Curse, I can breeze through levels that I once thought were impossible, but I consistently feel a bit clumsy in Half-Genie Hero even after several playthroughs. They've added a bunch of free DLC costumes (as separate modes) that change the gameplay drastically. They're all pretty fun, but they do mean playing through the same levels as the main game again, so that can get old after a while. Really, I would recommend the entire series [never played the first one]. Each one brings something different to the table. Risky's Revenge has some of the most innovative mechanics and level design; Pirate's Curse has the tightest gameplay, my favorite character art, and some of the best writing; and HGH takes us into high-def land, with 3D environments and super smooth animations. The writing is consistently funny throughout all three games. So pick your poison, I guess. But Pirate's Curse is the best....

The best of Shantae (again)

Another very good shantae game. A little easier than Pirate's curse. The graphics are a bit more appealing too but the mecanics of the game remain very much the same except for the addition of transformations (in animals).

Prefers HD over Content

The game is short, 6H30 for the main story line. The game makes excessive use of backtracking, 6 worlds with 2-4 areas, each area has at least one obstacle that can only be passed with the right ability and past that obstacle lies another ability, so game design is set so you need to play each level 3-5 times to get all abilities and accessories. The advertised DLCs add no real content but just more grinding through the same levels with different costumes and slightly changed gameplay. The soundtrack is a remix of previous Shantae titles, nothing new. Forced Locale. You can't just set your preferred language but you're stuck with the language of the operating system unless you can change that. To sum it up, HD is the selling argument for this title. No value for money, even at 50% off. Keep playing the classic Shantae titles!

Good game, but get the base version

The main game is excellent, with colourful environments, excellent art direction and OST. I don't think I've ever seen such a well animated hand drawn game. However, the DLCs are just padding. They reuse the same levels of the main game with different characters, altering the gameplay just a little bit. And some of those are really uninspired, too. I mean, c'mon: Pajamas mode? Seriously? This should be something you unlock for free. And Beach mode? Just for the fan service? Not to mention that Shantae herself has the best moves and maneuverability. So all of the modes feel like a step down.

Bad

I've played all the Shantae games and enjoyed them all, especially pirates curse so I was very excited for Half Genie Hero. On the day of it's release, my friend was playing it and I thought the graphics were brilliant (which to be fair, they are) so I immediately bought the game myself 100% it and frankly it was terrible. While the game starts out good with a town that reminds me of the original game and good humour, it eventually becomes you playing the same six dull levels again and again and again and if you play the DLC, which I did, it's just the same levels, again. Risky's gadgets are literally just reskins of shantae's transformations. After a while every time you finish the first level you'll spend the last two minutes just holding down the A button while doing something else The game is gorgeous looking technically sound but boring. I look forward to the release of The Seven Sirens but this game has made me wary.
