Lo Wang. The very name strikes fear in fortune cookie-eating Mafia men and small children everywhere. He is the reason most ninja wannabees have sold off their combat sandals to the local pawn shop. Lo Wang is Shadow Warrior. #1 Assassin. #1 Yakuza abuser. #1 Freak fragger. #1 Mutant mutilator. #1 Reason to be scared of the dark. Enter the Land of the Rising Sun and spread ninja charisma like napalm for there are undead sumos to be uzied, samurai to be shurikened, and bulldozers to be boarded. Don’t forget to goose the geishas and make sure your dinghy isn’t hanging out...
From the creators of Duke Nukem 3D, comes the ever-explosive, forever controversial Shadow Warrior, a first-person shooter that takes the Build engine to its extreme limits. Offering a destructible environment with a bevy of weapons--ranging from razor-sharp katanas, 4-barrel shotguns, and even your own fists--Shadow Warrior is sure to satisfy the hunger for some Lo Wang and not leave you hungry an hour later.
Shadow Warrior Complete includes the original Shadow Warrior and two expansions: Wanton Destruction and Twin Dragon.
Drivable vehicles smash through walls, crush enemies, and give you new explosive firepower!
Use a powerful arsenal of weapons, including throwing stars, uzis, and 4-barrel shotguns to take on the most outrageous collection of enemies ever created.
Hand to Face combat mode lets you kick butt and slice 'n' dice in true ninja fashion.
I'm not here to advocate Steam in any way. In fact, I hate Steam, but that's irrelevant. What matters is that this game is FREE there. Free forever.
I wish someone had told me, because I've essentially been ripped off.
Shadow Warrior is the game that comes closest to Duke Nukem in style, gameplay, and level design. It has its own bag of tricks, including sword combat, controllable Build engine vehicles, and a mini nuclear rocket launcher that clears entire rooms.
Unfortunately, it's also packed with nearly every Asian stereotype you've ever encountered, from coolie hats, fortune cookies, and naked anime girls to the severely broken English of the hero and his double entendre name. Like Duke Nukem, the goal was to push the boundaries of taste as far as they could to make an explosive pop culture experience. They pushed too far with Lo Wang. Duke Nukem was crude, but he fit the action hero template of 80's and 90's pop culture. Lo Wang is almost a throwback to the racist cartoons of World War 2, a character that exists to mock himself.
The game is huge, there's plenty of Build engine mayhem, and the level design is first rate for a game from the Doom era. It would be easier to recommend if it wasn't so reliant on racial stereotypes for its humor.
Shadow Warrior isn't the worst game to use the build engine, but it's also far from the best. The enemy design tries to be 'unique' but often falls flat with monsters that are not very fun to fight, many of the maps turn into lame key hunts when they aren't devoting themselves to gimmicks that feel duct-taped into an engine not meant to house them, and the majority of the weapons err towards being wacky instead of being useful.
If you've played Duke Nukem 3D and Blood and you are desperate for something that's sort of like that but not as good, it's worth playing...
...with the voice samples turned wayyyy down. This game was uncomfortably racist for 1997, and by now it must look like Song of the South. It's one thing to be 'politically incorrect' for the sake of a joke, but the only way you're going to get away with it is if the joke is actually funny. Instead the game regurgitates the "AH SO I ROVE YOU RONG TIME ME SO SOLLY FUH-GIV-I-NUSS PUREASE" voice you may remember from the 1940s. As a result it's not so much funny as it is grating and then immediately depressing.
I remembered playing this back when it was released, and despite being initially attracted to its nuke nukem 3D type gameplay and graphics - was put off by its racist caricature. By no means am I politically correct, I get that but this kind of humour is ONLY great if done well and aims to mock those in power/institutions or dated behaviours or norms we should leave behind (like racism).
A guy called 'Lo Wang' who is a Japanese ninja? Enough said. That should give you an idea of the infantile humour on display.
And to get those with psychotic tendencies interested in this game, our hero quips 'just like Nagasaki/hiroshima' when using a nuclear weapon - because nuclear weapons is funny right?
Somewhere, a middleschooler thought this game was funny. He is now a grown man and looks back on this game like a grown man looks back on Dragon Ball Z, something to be nostalgic about, and then something to be ashamed about at the same time.
It's funny how human beings phase out garbage as they grow older, and it's funny how we can tell who the reprehensible human beings are when they defend the idiotic garbage they used to enjoy, simply for the fact because it's old or makes other people legitimately uncomfortable. The only people giving this unmitigated garbage good reviews are people who get off on other people being offended and worse, as Asians, hurt, by an pea-brained game developer who thought Vietnam War era jabs at Asians was funny.
The only thing that's keeping this game from being as foul-mouthed and malicious as a GI stuck in the gunk with Vietcong advancing on his muddied position, is the fact that they don't use the word "gook."
But that's really about it.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
