Hard and fair great stealth game

A top-down strategic stealth game entirely about dodging view cones by cleverly using and combining the skills of your characters. The singular focus of this game on its mechanics make it an absolute joy to play by constantly needing to plan in advance. Every aspect of the gameplay mechanics are very well thought out and every level is carefully crafted to allow for multiple paths and tactics. While the gameplay mechanics itself are very unforgiving (new guards spawn if the enemy is alerted and take different patrol routes) and the levels always seem impossible at the start, the quick-save and -load mechanic make up for it. It allows for experimentation and trial-and-error without overly punishing the player. It even reminds you that you didn't save for a whole minute. Picking apart piece by piece a seemingly impossible level and eventually succeeding is always incredibly satisfying. Since I've completed the game without being detected, I can safely tell you that no level is actually impossible without being detected. The story is pretty bland, but it does introduce really cool interactions between the characters while playing. When executing a move, they typically confirm it by saying something. This dialogue changes depending on the environment you are playing in and what recent events happened which is pretty cool and really makes the characters come alive a lot more. Overal, I absolutely loved this game and would recommend it dearly to anyone that likes stealth games.

Great game

Shadow Tactics is one of the best games I have played lately. The gameplay is challenging to very challenging but I never felt like I was put in an impossible situation. The graphics are crisp and pleasing to the eyes. The characters and story are compelling enough that I wanted to see how it ends without dragging on for too long. The setting is already interesting by itself but they even went through the trouble of adding (optional) Japanese voice acting. If I had to name a negative it's that they don't have an OSX version so I cannot play it on my laptop. Compared to Commandos which I played back in the '90s, I think Shadow Tactics is more forgiving. In Commandos only the Green Beret could hide bodies but in this game all but one of the characters can. All characters also have an ability to distract enemies. The character abilities are less situational and more generally useful compared to Commandos. As a result every character pulls their weight more or less equally. Yet they all play very differently and have their own personality to go with it. My favourite character is Yuki with her traps and lure though.

Believe it!

It must have been nearly 20 years ago that I played Desperados 1 ... and I fell in love with the Quickload-game-experience. The colourful characters, the very different levels, the general atmosphere and the dark glee when you have found a tactic that works - I've played it three times and it was worth it every time. Since I didn't like the second part very much, Shadow Tactics was a godsend. It took all the things I described above and put it into a setting that you hardly ever see in video games. I would definitely buy a sequel, and I'd even buy story DLCs (something I hardly ever do). I can't wait to try Desperados 3 from the same publisher, but until then I'll try new tactics in another Shadow Tactics run.

Better than Commandos

This might be a little subjective, since both Commandos and the Edo era Japan is dear to me, but this game is simply amazing even for those who don't generally like stealth/tactic games. + The voice acting and music are simply awesome, and the characters actually trade dialogues depending on your actions. These really boos the immersion. + Challenges. These are not simply badges/achievements (each map has 9, 1 is always hardcore, 1 is always speedrun), but very-very smart: if you replay the levels to complete certain challenges, the game force you to think differently than before, you'll find new tricks, and get better and better. This is especially true for the speedruns. The first completition of each of the 13 missions takes around 1-2 hours. By doing challenges, you can reduce these to 2-15 minutes. + Characters. All five (+1 since Kuma is almost like a sixth character) were my favourite, bot personalitywise and skillwise. + Skills. Every character has 3+2 (the last two are limited ammo flintlock pistol and healing for each of them), and none of them are useless. What I really love are the small differences: both Yuki and Mugen has a standard attack which can oneshot guards, but mugen's animation takes only 0.9 seconds, while Yuki's take 3 secs, which has a huge impact. Similalry the corpse dragging, movement speed, etc. abilities are shared, but differ for pretty much every character. And there are no useless placeholder skills, every one of them are damn useful. - Camera. The good thing is that you can rotate/zoom it, the bad thing is that you have to. The game handles the different levels (height-wise) terribly, and 1 pixel difference can mean that you won't attack the guard, but hook to the roof. And in some part, you simply can't positionthe camera to a useful angle +The mission designs. The story is okay if not fantastic, but each mission has its own characteristics and gimmicks. I remember each one of them, which was not the case for similar games

Great old school game

Years ago i was in love with the commando's and desperado's games because they are such good games. When i saw this game i really looked forward to it, but was also sceptical because it has been years since such a game was made and i played such a game. But Mimimi did a super job with this game. The gameplay and mechanics are just like those old games and still work great in this modern time. Grafisch are super i was stunned on how well the locations looked. The whole look and feel was so good i really liked the art and the music and it all fits together. I played the game with japanese voices and english subtitles, because i felled it should be played that way and i loved it. This is a must buy in my eyes
