Memories linger across time, deep beneath the island’s surface...
In this story-driven 3D platformer, explore Sephonie Island's massive cave network, and link with unidentified species using the novel Puzzle Grid system. Explore the island's depths as shipwrecked biologists Amy, Ing-wen, and Riyou, whose personal histories come to bear on the shifting spiritual landscape of the island depths.
Parkour-esque platforming
Use an acrobatic moveset to navigate lush, jade canopies and rusty sandstone spires. Fling yourself over high ledges using the satisfying Teledash Vault and deftly Wallrun across dangerous outcroppings.
Grapple through the air with the help of long-tongued Ribbats or climb tall cliffs via sticky-ridged Gripshrooms. Linking with certain creatures will grant you new abilities to reach the farthest depths of the island.
The Relaxing and Casual Puzzle Grid System
The trio must research the island's unknown creatures by Linking with them. Using the one-of-a-kind "Puzzle Grid" system, you'll rotate and place a series of multi-colored pieces onto the board to create large, same-colored islands. Each creature has different challenges to overcome!
There's no 'right' solution to Linking: use your intuition to react to the creature's moves and what appears on the board, and you will soon be on your way to success!
A Research Trip Gone Awry
In the near future, three biologists are on a joint mission to use their state-of-the-art ONYX implants to research the creatures of the uninhabited Sephonie Island. But as they approach the island, a sudden storm leaves them shipwrecked.
Amy Lim, Taiwanese-American and bold leader, hails from the midwestern USA town of Bloomington. Riyou Hayashi, an analytically-minded Japanese-Taiwanese researcher, calls the bustling Tokyo his home. And Ing-wen Lin, a kind and considerate Taiwanese scientist, lives in Taipei.
The trio will find their motivations and loyalties put to the test as they navigate Sephonie’s caverns, facing not only physical challenges but also their deepest memories and dreams. As they grow more intimate with each other and the island, an ancient force, brewing deep in the island's abyss, may threaten their newfound relationship, and the world...

Sephonie does not support square resolutions (Less wide than 16:10). Sephonie will run fine with these resolutions but some UI may be cut off, which you can fix by using the in-game UI Scaling option or by running the game in a 16:9/16:10 windowed resolution.
The same goes for UWHD resolutions in fullscreen.
Sephonie only officially and natively supports certain controllers (PS4/5, XB1/XB360). Other controllers may work, but functionality is not guaranteed. In particular the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is NOT supported although players have gotten it working.

the plattforming parts in sephonie were surprisingly hard, compared to other analgesic games, which mostly wasn't a problem, but i didn't learn how to wallrun properly until i played the "wallrun level".
the "match 3 puzzles" are mostly easy and the story is as cheesy as you'd expect, if you've played other analgesic games.
sephonie is one of those games rare, where i can mostly turn off my brain and enjoy playing, the music, the atmosphere and just not think about anything else.
like a mental vacation.
This is mostly a 3D Platformer, but you will have "battles" that play like a cross between Panel de Pon and Daedalian Opus, though extra elements are continually introduced to maintain complexity. I'm not great at the Puzzle genre, and I still enjoyed them a great deal; they weren't impossibly hard for non-veterans of the genre, but were intricate enough that they remained fresh and interesting, even in the very last one. The world is filled with surreal beauty, and the soundtrack wonderfully fits that, as is to be expected from Melos and Marina; I'm a huge fan of their work, and this might be my favorite soundtrack that they've ever put out.
Unfortunately, the platforming is really frustrating; the movement feels just fine, but the wall-run mechanic almost feels like a glitch, and it's pretty central. I can't harp on this too much, because if you get too frustrated, there are always the infinite dash and infinite jump options. That gets you through any difficult spots, but it's often hard to figure out where to even go. Sure, you could just speed... jump? your way over to the exits or any of the items or species you want to interact with, but with this game's incredible visual design, you want to progress through the areas as intended, because the visual flow of the design is absolutely impeccable. I found some of the cutscenes to be a bit disjointed, too; I'm fine with abstract storytelling, and exploring many different topics, but I think it was a little too short for each of the parts to fully grow and develop.
Overall, I did enjoy my time with Sephonie, and would recommend it if you're a fan of Analgesic's other work, but it's not without its frustrations.
Sephonie is a platformer with abstract puzzles about a group of researchers marooned on a mysterious island. The keyboard and mouse controls are rebindable and there are a lot of accessibility and difficulty options for different parts of gameplay.
The reason for the 2-star rating is that during one of the early scenes, the narrator was describing in detail the smell and the taste of a burnt and gutted (by one of the main characters) corpse and what the smell and the taste reminded the characters about. None of them gave a second thought to killing a living being for lols nor did the narrator pointed it out. The scene was long and descriptive enough for me to request a refund.
While the representation of LGBTQ+ and POC is welcome in general, this game managed to make all of them repulsive. This is not what we are.
