The Seal of Evil story is set in the twilight years of the Warring States period of Chinese history (476 ? 206 BC). This turbulent time marks the disintegration of the longest lived of all imperial dynasties, the Zhou. Out of the strife and chaos emerges a nobleman possessed of an indomitable spirit and an uncompromising vision of the future: Ying Zheng, ruler of the Qin state. He will stop at nothing to reunite the disparate Chinese kingdoms. Combining ancient legends and mythic storytelling with historical fact, Seal of Evil sets the stage for an epic adventure wherein the players struggle to thwart the Qin invasion of their peaceful homeland, East Baiyue. Ferocious beasts, merciless enemy soldiers, wicked bandits, and terrifying supernatural foes are hazards they must face in order to achieve this goal. There is still hope for them, however, for along the way they will also make many friends and acquire powerful weapons and equipment. And armed with mighty elemental magic, they may yet come face to face with the very Gods themselves.

I'm an enthusiast of chinese history and mythology and I was expecting a better game. Unfortunately, Seal of Evil don't provided a good gameplay for me.
The soundtrack is very repetitive and the voice acting is below amateur level. For a 2006 game, the graphics are very outdated, although the art style is good.
Combat is too slow for a ARPG, enemies respawn everytime you enter the map, your characters auto attack any nearby enemines and scatter through the screen.
The history, the world and the characters seeens interesting, but I only was able to play for 6 hours before refunding. The gameplay is not worth it, in my opinion.
I've been re-playing some of the games I played years ago - mostly out of nostalgia and with intent to experience them whole. On the first try I probably played for few hours, thought it fell short compared to classic RPGs and hack'n'slashes. Now I played it to verify if my opinion wasn't unfounded. I'm not really the type to write reviews but this time I feel obliged toward potential players.
The best thing about the game is the setting. Back in the day it was quite unique and a welcome change from typical fantasy. Music is good (though repetitive), SFX are fine, world and areas design is alright, and at first it really seems like it has that classic RPG/HnS feel. Unlike a lot of other games of that time, SoE has a crafting system that looks really promising.
But all of that pales in comparison with the cons of the game. Fighting feels very sluggish, it drags on for too long and isn't satisfying at all. Mobs are too tanky, most of the time you just wait for the party to finish them off with autoattacks, because skills cost too much mana, and the regen is too slow. Most of the fights with groups (3-4 mobs) last for nearly a minute and there are over thousand of them. Bosses feel irrelevant, because they're not really harder to beat than common mobs. Far cry from the likes of Diablo 2, Icewind Dale, etc. Then there is character building, levelling up and so on - in this game you never feel powerful and stats doesn't seem to matter too much. For example you give a lot into Fire, so you think you have good hitrate and dodge? Let me tell you - it doesn't make apparent difference whether you have 10 or 70 into the stat (other than maybe Wood - HP). The promising crafting system I mentioned earlier is an abomination, don't bother with it or you'll get angry. At first it looks fine, but later on you can't really refine any of the equipment because apparently you need higher level (sometimes even 8 more) and you can buy better equipment anyway.
Don't waste your time.
Seal of Evil has good fundamentals and fun systems. Simple character progression is complemented by an engaging crafting system that intertwines with character stats for a snowball effect. Environments are nice looking, characters are interesting to listen to, and the story is acceptable.
The whole game is brought down to the ground by a sheer bloat of filler combat content that actively dares you to stop playing. Combat is very passive and slow, and there's way too much of it. Enough to say that I gave up after a dozen or son hours in.
a nice little adventuring game, limited on adventuring but really big on item creation. Sadly this old classic lacks much of what we normally expect in a game now, such as a world map, quest icons and indicators, and other things. So often you'll be about in the world and no clue which way to go or what to do next unless you stumble across it. A perfect example is a quest to find someone out in a forest. They don't show up as an icon on the minimap and there isn't any indicator on where they are, you just run into a cutscene if you arrive near the area in the forest where the event trigger is.
Now the good part about the game is you can collect material in order to craft armor and items for your 5 characters. As you get higher in levels and find better items you can make better items and gear. Sadly, this is pretty much the main focus of the game. Combat is lackluster, enemies aren't difficult, and you'll be looking and gathering a ton of gear for you to craft stuff. For me, about about level 11-12 i was really really bored with the item crafting feature and realized.. well that is the main part of the game is finding material and upgrading your gear. Na, i was done.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
